Full Job Description
Teacher of English (part-time)
Start: September 2026
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an inspirational and dedicated part-time English teacher to join this highly successful faculty.
With an excellent honours degree in English, you will use your imagination, commitment and ambition to inspire our students to enjoy studying English Literature. In addition, you will possess the insight and enthusiasm to convey the nuances of English Language in an engaging and adventurous way.
The English Faculty is made up of a team of six subject specialists, including the Faculty Leader and the English Coordinator.
The successful post holder should be capable of stretching High Potential Learners, as well as supporting students across the ability range, including those who are learning the subject in a second language.
You will be expected to build on the department's successful, engaging approach to teaching and learning, and will also be able to model and encourage academic rigour in the subject. Personal engagement is essential and responding to the needs of the individual student - be it preparing for examinations in booster classes or guiding the most able through Oxbridge applications - is at the heart of the faculty's ethos.
You should be familiar with computer technology as a tool for learning, teaching and administration, and be prepared to develop your skills further. All teaching rooms are equipped with permanent internet access and interactive whiteboards; all students in KS3 and KS4 have access to a Microsoft device in their lessons with which they use a variety of learning platforms.
The postholder will inspire students to enjoy English beyond the classroom, whether this is in creative writing competitions or attending author talks. Please note that the postholder will be expected to participate in department theatre trips to enhance curriculum learning.
The faculty teaches both English Literature and English Language from Year 7 through to the AQA GCSE course. Please note that the faculty teaches the A Level Edexcel English Literature and Language course.
Teachers at Ashford enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff. Single-person accommodation may be available in return for boarding duties.
This is a part-time position at approximately 0.4 of a timetable.
Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate.
Note - Applications will be reviewed on reciept. We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.
Ashford School is part of United Learning, a large and growing group of schools aiming to offer a life-changing education across England. As a group, we achieve more by sharing than any single school could.
Ashford School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.
