Full Job Description

English at Habs Girls extends well beyond the curriculum. The department has a vibrant programme of enrichment, including our Critical Readers' Award, theatre visits, residential trips, workshops and visiting speakers. We also benefit from a Writer in Residence programme, regularly welcoming writers and other guests to share their expertise and work with pupils. All members of the department contribute to our extensive co-curricular programme, with opportunities ranging from creative writing to national competitions such as Poetry By Heart. We value both academic rigour and creativity, and our pupils relish opportunities to pursue their own intellectual interests. We are looking for a colleague who will enjoy working alongside them and who can bring their own enthusiasm, ideas and expertise to the department.

We are looking for an inspiring and enthusiastic Teacher of English to join the English Department at Haberdashers' Girls' School on a fixed-term basis. We are happy to consider applications from candidates seeking either full-time or part-time work. Whether you are an experienced teacher or at an earlier stage of your career, we would love to hear from someone who shares our enthusiasm for the power of literature and language, and who wants to help young people become thoughtful, confident and curious readers, writers and thinkers. Our English Department is ambitious, intellectually curious and forward-thinking, with a deep passion for literature and language. We teach a rich and diverse range of literary and non-literary texts, encouraging pupils to explore how language shapes meaning, identity and the world around us. Our pupils are highly motivated and enjoy being challenged. They are encouraged to question, debate and consider different interpretations and perspectives, developing the confidence to express their own informed and independent judgements, both in speech and in writing. At Key Stage 3, our bespoke curriculum places a strong emphasis on wide reading, creative exploration and the development of core analytical and communication skills, building on the school's Habits programme. At GCSE and A Level, pupils undertake rigorous study in English Literature and English Language, achieving excellent outcomes while developing a lasting appreciation of the subject., We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a genuine passion for English, literature and language
  • Is committed to providing an engaging, challenging and inspiring experience for pupils
  • Can foster curiosity, creativity and critical thinking in the classroom
  • Values both academic achievement and the wider development of young people
  • Enjoys working collaboratively and contributing to the life of a busy and vibrant department
  • Is keen to contribute to co-curricular and enrichment opportunities
  • Most importantly, we are looking for someone who shares our belief that English can illuminate, question and transform our understanding of the world.

Habs has been awarded Independent School of the Year 2025, with Haberdashers' Elstree Schools receiving both the award for Outstanding Educational Partnerships and the overall top accolade of Independent School of the Year 2025. This national recognition reflects our long-term commitment to social impact and the deep, sustained collaborations we continue to build with our state sector partners. It is an exciting and proud moment to be joining our community.

  • A competitive salary, commensurate with the candidate's experience and the size of the School
