Full Job Description
Kew House School was established in the conviction that there exists an opportunity for a different kind of independent secondary school in London - academically demanding but with a forward-thinking approach to selection criteria, the flexibility of the curriculum, the shape of the school day, and recognition of creativity and talent. A character-selective school, we pride ourselves on the support and care we extend to our 500 pupils whilst striving to add value to their success in all fields of academia, sport, and creativity. Kew House has successfully grown over ten years since its foundation, with a successful art programme a core feature of this growth. We are seeking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic Teacher of Art to join our team from September 2026. This is a permanent position, with both part-time and full-time applications considered. The role is suitable for an Early Career Teacher (ECT) / Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT), or an experienced teacher who is passionate about delivering high-quality teaching and inspiring students in Art. Curriculum Pupils will study Art across Years 7 and 8 as part of the creative subject carousel, refining their application and understanding of the subject through three regularly updated schemes of work. Pupils who take the subject at GCSE will begin in Year 9 with a skills-building year that introduces them to advanced technical mastery, as well as purposeful experimentation and critical thinking. Coursework is amassed across Year 10 with a sustained sculptural project, and Year 11 is launched with a mock-exam unit, followed by the externally set assignment. At A-level, pupils explore digital platforms and sketchbooks across two schemes of work and begin their personal study unit in the latter part of Year 12. Their exam unit is completed in Year 13, and the course is concluded with an ambitious and professionally presented showcase of pupil work. Extra-Curricular The Art department is central to the school's extra-curricular provision, with a wide range of clubs, trips, and cross-curricular programmes. We provide after-school support at GCSE and A-level and often have visiting artists and designers work with specific year groups. Our involvement with external competitions and agencies is extraordinarily successful, as is our ability to place pupils into their first-choice art schools beyond their A-level studies. All staff are expected to have a clear understanding of the aims, objectives, and ethos of the school, and an awareness of its role in the community. The academic and pastoral frameworks in the school must be seen as interrelated. The successful candidate will:
- Promote a love of art for every pupil by delivering engaging and stimulating lessons which set appropriate learning expectations and targets for improvement.
- Have the capacity to raise attainment through motivation, challenge, and inspiration, conveying this effectively to all pupils up to Sixth Form.
- Have a commitment to the Safeguarding and wellbeing of pupils.
- Hold a subject-relevant degree from a reputable university.
- Have a broad knowledge and understanding of art and be able to contribute to the department's rigorous teaching of print, photography, sculpture, painting, and film.
- Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a willingness to contribute to departmental resources.
- Have experience or demonstrable understanding of the use of online platforms to support pupils' learning.
- Help foster a culture of high expectations of art learning within the department, whilst ensuring appropriate support and differentiation is delivered to meet all pupil needs.
- Be driven and enthusiastic about education, and show warmth and humour in character.
- Have excellent communication and ICT skills, and maintain a professional approach which inspires confidence in pupils and parents.
- Show eagerness to deliver a wide range of extra-curricular demands throughout the year. Key responsibilities of the role will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- To teach the Art curriculum to an excellent standard and to promote and contribute to the overall provision within the Art department, e.g. clubs and competitions.
- To continually update knowledge regarding 'best practice' in the teaching of Art through personal practice, research, and CPD.
- To promote and maintain the high standards of pupil achievement and contribute to the sustainment of outstanding teaching practice across the department.
- To complete all pupil assessment requirements, including the regular marking of homework and coursework, as required.
- To assess, record and track the progress of the pupils and use performance data for pupil target setting and progress monitoring.
- To contribute to the pastoral care of pupils as a Personal Tutor.
- To attend parent and pupil meetings, as required.
- To attend whole school and departmental INSET days and contribute to the evaluation and progress of the Art curriculum. How to Apply Kew House School will only accept applications from candidates completing the school application and equal-opportunities forms via the 'Apply' button. CVs will not be accepted in substitution, but may be submitted alongside the application forms. Candidates should demonstrate how they meet the role criteria in their application form, supporting statement, and interview, including supporting tasks. Immediate applications are welcome and will be considered on receipt. Suitable applicants will be contacted by email and invited to attend an interview by arrangement. Application deadline: Thursday 16th April 2026 with interviews week commencing 20th April. Early applications are strongly encouraged. Kew House School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
