Full Job Description

The Bristol Bioresource Laboratories (BBL), located across sites: Oakfield House and L&R Southmead Hospital, wishes to recruit an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual for the role of Laboratory Technician. The post holder will be part of a team of technicians who cover all aspects of laboratory work involved in processing and storing biological samples. The laboratory is staffed Monday to Saturday all year round and an out of hours list is in place to deal with freezer failures. It is a requirement of the post that you are able to work some Saturdays. You must also be willing to work shifts including late evenings, additional weekends, and bank holidays to provide cover for clinics when they are running. Part-time hours will be considered for this post.

What will you be doing?

Lab activities will include, but not limited to: · Processing of unscreened biological samples including (but not limited to) blood, urine, saliva, and placenta. This may require completion of a course of immunisations. · Receipt logging and retrieval of biological samples. · Out of hours cover on rotation, including lone working on evenings and weekends. Will be part of a 24hr on-call list in case of freezer breakdown. · Catalogue samples and maintain samples stored in freezers and cryostores. This will require the ability to perform lifting of large racks of samples on a daily basis. · DNA extraction, specialised Illumina microarray processing, biochemical analysis. · Operation of specialised bespoke robotic systems

You should apply if

You have some previous laboratory experience and, ideally, have training in aseptic techniques and handling biological samples, although full training will be given. You are physically able to lift large racks of samples on a daily basis.

You are able to work some Saturdays (approximately 1 week in 4) and join the out of hours list to be on call approximately one week in six. You must also be willing to work shifts including late evenings and additional weekends and Bank Holidays to provide cover for clinics when they are running.
