Full Job Description

The insurance team currently consists of 3 people and this is a new role to increase the team to 4 people. The insurance team currently place more than 30 insurance policies covering around 45 different classes of insurance including Liability, Professional Negligence, Property, Business Interruption, Motor, Terrorism, Engineering, Medical Malpractice, Clinical Trials and Contract Works. The current insurance budget is £5 - £6m per annum. The team provide technical expertise to the University to related insurance requirements and contract wordings and arrange suitable insurance cover to mitigate the financial risks to the University. We also handle claims. This involves complex negotiations with insurers, brokers, loss adjusters, solicitors and liaison and negotiation with colleagues within the University.What will you be doing?

  • Providing support to the Head of Insurance with complex matters such a large projects and contract wordings.
  • Calculating insurance costings for projects and research activities
  • Reviewing and analysing detailed wordings of policy documents provided by insurers to ensure it meets the needs of the University and negotiating wider cover if required
  • Oversight of large complex claims
  • Extensive liaison with colleagues within the University dealing with enquiries which will include unique risks, never insured before, then analysing the insurance and risk implications and communicating to insurers the cover required. This requires complex technical knowledge in order to translate the business need to insurance language.
  • Identifying and mitigating risks
  • Offering technical guidance, training and support to more junior colleagues in the insurance team
  • Deputise for the Head of Insurance when needed. This will include taking the insurance lead on major building contracts and research projects as well as providing guidance to colleagues

    Extensive knowledge of underwriting and policy documentation preferably in a commercial underwriting role covering most of our classes of insurance with a demonstrable ability to learn about other classes of cover
  • A professional insurance qualification (or progress towards it) plus extensive experience in a related role
  • Level 4/5 standard of education or equivalent qualifications or experience
  • Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and work under pressure
  • Excellent analytical and diagnostic skills
  • Excellent IT skills including Office 365, Excel, Word and Adobe
  • A customer-focused attitude with the ability to communicate well in writing and handle sensitive situations with tact and care
  • Ability to build strong relationships across the organisation and explain complex information in a concise manner
  • Ability to work well in a team in a flexible way to ensure the insurance team meet the deadlines and needs of the University. This will involve covering for other members of the team at times
