Full Job Description

We are looking for young people to volunteer to support the Summer Reading Challenge in Portsmouth Libraries from Thursday 25 July to Saturday 30 August. You will be working with children, their parents and carers, predominantly when the holidays start on 25 July. Duties will involve:

  • Volunteering in 3-hour slots at peak times (normally between the hours 10am to 4pm).
  • Being a really enthusiastic promoter of the Summer Reading Challenge in the library.
  • Registering children for the Summer Reading Challenge.
  • Talking with children about the books they have been reading, encouraging them to share their views and ideas.
  • Sharing the exciting Marvellous Makers resources with children and their families.
  • Assisting library staff in delivering children's story time and craft activities.
  • Being part of a library team under the supervision of library staff.
  • About the organisation With nine branch libraries and a mobile library, volunteers can get involved in a variety of activities at Portsmouth libraries. There's something for everyone, whatever your interests and the time you have available. We'll give you support and train you for the role you're interested in.

  • Aged between 12 - 19, Minimum time commitment
  • No criminal record (DBS) check required
  • Suitable for 14yr olds
  • Suitable for 15yr olds
  • Suitable for 16 year olds

  • Morning Afternoon Evening Typically you will volunteer at least once a week in a 3-hour slot (normally between the hours 10am to 4pm) during the summer holidays at mutually convenient times.
