Student Mentors

Would you like to serve as an ambassador at a national conference for University Maths School students? U-Maths, the umbrella organisation for University Maths Schools in England, is holding its first ever student conference in July 2026 at Lancaster University, welcoming around 180 Year 12 students from across the country, including the Exeter, King's College London, Liverpool and Lancaster University Maths Schools. As a key part of this event, we are looking to recruit 5 current Lancaster undergraduate or postgraduate students to work as ambassadors all day on Tuesday 7 July 2026. You'll lead a series of campus tours and join the panel for some 'Question Time'-style events, answering questions on your life as a Lancaster student. You'll assist the teachers at the event and help ensure the conference runs smoothly. This is your opportunity to gain some paid work as a student ambassador and help develop the School of Mathematical Sciences' links with the University Maths Schools.,

• Giving campus tours to groups of Year 12 students attending the conference.
• Appearing on a 'Question Time' style panel alongside fellow student mentors and answering questions from Year 12 students attending the conference.
• Facilitating the delivery of activities at the conference.
• Assisting in ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all those attending the conference during their allocated shift, including any students with disabilities or additional support needs.
• Adhering to all departmental and university policies and procedures including those relating to Safeguarding and Health & Safety.
• Helping ensure appropriate behaviour is maintained by students attending the conference.
• Reporting any issues that arise to staff coordinating the conference.
• Any other duties to support the running of the conference.
  
  A current undergraduate or postgraduate student at Lancaster University.
• A clear and appropriate rationale for applying for this role.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to express information and ideas in a clear manner.
• Be reliable, trustworthy and honest.
• Be flexible and adaptable.
• Able to work effectively as part of a team whilst also having a strong initiative.
• Have a friendly and positive approach to work.
Desirable
• Studying in the School of Mathematical Sciences, on either a scheme administered by this department or a joint scheme to which this department contributes.
• Knowledge of the topics taught in A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
• Experience of speaking in front of an audience.
• Experience of working with young people.
• Experience of service as a student ambassador at Lancaster.
