Full Job Description

New Beginnings is a specialist in-patient detoxification unit for drug and alcohol service users combined with a structured day programme (SDP) accessible to service users undergoing medicated detoxification. The staff on the detoxification unit work as part of an integrated team with the structured day programme staff to offer a comprehensive and seamless programme to service users.

He/she will nurse inpatients with a low to high degree of complexity whilst they are undergoing detoxification on the unit under the supervision of the Ward Manager and Deputy Ward Manager, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Speciality Doctor/Consultant as appropriate.

To link service users with the structured day programme so that they can access a range of group work and recovery support interventions such as access to support with education, training, employment, debt management, housing, sports and diversionary activities and other wrap around services, building strong links with other statutory and non-statutory organisations to increase physical and economic capital for service users.

Main duties of the job

To conduct risk/needs assessment and develop and implement risk management plans in line with policy and procedure.

To use agreed and established outcome monitoring tools and any other relevant quality measures.

To undertake physical health checks and the management of symptoms through appropriate care planning.

To counsel individuals about their drug and alcohol use using motivational interviewing, relapse prevention and other evidence based interventions.

Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary and promote carers assessments as required.

To undertake/facilitate the collection of specimens for analysis

To use clinical judgment in assessing patients for withdrawals and administer PRN medication or symptomatic relief as required.

To complete all relevant physical health risk assessments on admission and discharge and throughout the patient's admission.

To Laise with patients' key workers at referring service to ensure smooth discharge is planned.

To carry out relevant checks and audits including controlled drugs check, daily grab bag check and temperature monitoring.

To undertake general health assessments of service users at the start of treatment and at agreed intervals throughout treatment.
