ABOUT THE ROLE Winchester College is offering four undergraduate students who are currently undertaking a relevant Sports Coaching degree at a UK university the opportunity to gain meaningful applied experience in a leading school-based sports coaching environment. This placement is suitable for students undertaking formal university placement modules or those seeking independent coaching experience. The role will primarily involve working alongside and supporting sport-specific coaching staff in the planning, delivery and evaluation of sessions across Winchester College's games programme. Once their competence and suitability have been assessed, students may occasionally be given responsibility for a group, with appropriate supervision and support arrangements in place. Opportunities will be tailored to each student's coaching specialism in one or more of the following sports: football, cricket, hockey, netball, athletics, rowing, basketball, tennis, squash and badminton. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of long-term player development, age-appropriate coaching and the balance between participation and performance pathways in a school sport setting. The placement also offers insight into the wider sporting ecosystem, providing the chance to collaborate with sports coaches, teaching staff and pastoral teams. RESPONSIBILITIES OF SPORTS COACHING UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT STUDENTS Key Responsibilities

  • To provide enthusiastic and high-quality technical / tactical coaching, with the effective use of appropriate resources and the highest standards of learning and achievement of all pupils.
  • To coach sports as required in the games and activities programme as directed by the Director of Sport.
  • To attend matches and tournaments as required
  • When necessary to organise the filming of matches.
  • To assist with video analysis, including organising and clipping footage so that it is ready for review
  • To complete all Socs registers as and when required
  • To set up and clear away all specific equipment used during sessions.
  • To give feedback to players to develop their performance and understanding
  • To provide match reports and or highlight any specific examples of outstanding performances, conduct, attitude and application by pupils within the group being coached.
  • To keep abreast of developments in his/her sport(s) and its coaching methods in order to maintain a high level of professional competence. Placement students will also receive a termly review meeting with the Head Coach of the sport and / or the Director of Sport.
  • To maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both on the School premises and when they are engaged in School and other activities elsewhere, within the framework of the Health and Safety Policy documents.
  • To adhere to and manage all appropriate Health & Safety legislation, risk assessments and Child Protection training issues.

  • Essential: Passion for sport and physical education and a basic understanding of child development.

  • BENEFITS, TERMS AND CONDITIONS AND APPLICATION Start Date and Duration The anticipated start date is September 2026, subject to satisfactory completion of all required pre-employment checks. The initial placement will run until the end of the 2026/27 academic year. There may be scope for continued work on a zero-hours basis, depending on the College's requirements, but no continuation is guaranteed. Hours of Work This is a zero-hours role, with approximately 35 hours of work anticipated per student per term. Work will usually take place on one or two afternoons or evenings per week during term time, depending on the student's availability and the College's requirements. Salary The basic hourly rate is £15. Statutory holiday pay, calculated at 12.07% of pay, will be paid in addition. Payment will be made monthly in arrears to the postholder's nominated bank account for the hours worked, with holiday pay shown separately on the payslip. Induction and Continuous Training and Development The school is fully committed to the induction, training and development of all our staff, with staff supported to grow and reach their full potential. We deliver a range of training, run by both our own staff and external providers, varying from highly practical First Aid courses to seminars and learning lunches on many aspects of teaching and learning. There is an annual cycle of appraisal offering the opportunity to reflect on professional practice and development opportunities. The school also offers a wide range of apprenticeships supporting staff development and progression. Pension and Life Cover On employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College's pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College's pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College's pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College's Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 4% and the employer 3%. After 9 month's membership of the Tier 1 plan, employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a GPP, where the employee contributes 5% and the employer 9%. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2, Life Cover changes to 4 times salary. Annual Leave Statutory holiday entitlement will accrue in accordance with the Working Time Regulations. Holiday pay will be calculated at 12.07% of pay, paid in addition to the basic hourly rate and shown separately on the payslip. Leave must be agreed in advance.
