Full Job Description
Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Oncology at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post holder will join the Oncology Department. The main focuses of the post are:
- To provide continuity of care for in-patients on the Oncology Ward
- To provide rapid review of patients presenting via the Oncology Triage Unit with symptoms of their cancer or consequences of treatment
- To ensure the delivery of excellent Oncology care to in-patients on the Oncology Ward, by working closely with the Trust outreach Oncology Services
- To work with the ward FY3 doctor to provide continuity of care on the ward for the patients, The post holder will work in conjunction with the existing FY2/IMT trainees, the Oncology ward FY3 doctor, alongside the Oncology Registrar on-call, and under the guidance of Oncology Consultants. We expect the post holder to manage the day-to-day medical care of Oncology patients on the ward and will be expected to review patients independently some of the time. There are twice daily handovers, the Oncology Consultant on-call is available throughout each shift and there will be a scheduled post-take Consultant-led ward round each afternoon. It is important that the post holder liaises closely with ward-based nurses, the Oncology Triage Service and the Trust's Palliative Care Team., The post holder will be responsible for managing all aspects of day-to-day medical care on the Oncology Ward, including supervising the junior team to ensure the prompt completion of e-discharge summaries, VTE assessments, dementia screening, result endorsement etc. and any clinic letters on patients under his/her care, and for ensuring good communication with General Practitioners and referring Clinicians as appropriate. The post holder will not participate in the regular on call rota. It would be expected that the post holder will contribute to the development of the service, will participate fully in the department's Governance meetings, will provide continuity and training for our Oncology ward juniors and will help develop opportunities for an expanded Middle Grade Oncology team going forward, including proactive integration with the visiting Palliative Care Service.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council at time of appointment., Completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training, at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty
- Experience in general medicine and management of acutely unwell patients', Knowledge and experience of Oncology and/or Palliative Medicine
- Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
- An understanding of the current NHS environment, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
