Full Job Description

The post holder's core duties of 10 sessions will be within the Oxford Eye Hospital [KC(O1] and will form a mixture of face to face, virtual and injection clinics. There will be admin time allocated as part of the job plan for administrative duties., The Oxford Eye Hospital works closely with the University of Oxford, thus conferring a wide range of opportunities for collaborations in research and teaching. The postholders would have the opportunity to work within a dynamic consultant team and help develop expansion of community based outreach medical retina clinics. The appointees should have extensive clinical experience including advanced training in MR; experience of working in the NHS; established clinical leadership skills and the ability to develop and innovate new models of patient care. A willingness and ability to help train and mentor ophthalmology trainees and allied health professionals are essential. This post is included in the consultant on call rota., Annual and study leave arrangements must be co-ordinated within the specialty to ensure there is an acceptable level of consultant cover.

  • Full GMC with licence to practice
  • Shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council; and
  • Shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme or as a fixed term specialty trainee in medical retina; or
  • Shall have equivalent experience and competencies.

  • DO or equivalent
  • MRCOphth or equivalent
  • FRCOphth or equivalent, Experience as a Specialty Trainee, Fellow or Specialty Doctor in general Ophthalmology service including Medical Retina.
  • Evidence of recent CME activity and satisfactory career progression.
  • Ability to make decisions independently

  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team, Ability to motivate and develop training medical staff and work as a member of a team
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to effectively organize and manage clinical workload
  • Undertake effectively the role of a specialty doctor in a large teaching hospital.
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills.
  • Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels should be highly developed.
  • Experience of routine clinical audit
  • Desirable criteria
  • Computing skills: ability to use word processor, spread sheet programme and web browser
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
  • Involvement in previous research projects in Ophthalmology, Driving Licence, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

This post holder will provide Specialty Doctor care in medical retina (vascular medical retina and AMD services). The current medical retina team comprises seven other medical retina consultants (some of whom are academic or less than full time), medical retina fellows, several general fellows and optometrists with extended roles. Deanery trainees also work with in the service. The intravitreal injection service is provided largely by allied health professionals.
