Full Job Description
This is a career enhancing opportunity for an ambitious Speciality Doctor in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care to join Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust based within our team at Wythenshawe Hospital, with an option to undertake additional work at other sites depending on your preference and developmental opportunities.
The Department will endeavour to support applicants looking to apply for consultant posts via the CESR route, and as a large Trust with multiple sub-speciality areas, much of the 2010 Anaesthetic Curriculum can be covered.
The Department will also endeavour to aid successful applicants in the development of specialist interests within the fields of anaesthesia, critical care, pain and perioperative medicine.
Specific job plans will be organised following discussion with the Clinical Directors and Job Planning leads. This may incorporate out-of-hours commitments, or weekend working.
Direct Clinical Care may be fixed in time and place, some fixed in time and some annualised. As part of the Managed Clinical Service of CSS, the post holder may be required to work across the Trust site., Wythenshawe Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care Department
The department has extensive accommodation including offices for the medical staff, Acute Pain nurses and secretarial staff, a seminar room and a trainee's common room incorporating the Departmental Library.
The purpose-built Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit (CTCCU) - a combined intensive care unit and high dependency unit has 31 beds.
The hospital acts as a tertiary referral centre for cardiothoracic surgery and this specialty accounts for the bulk of the ICU's admissions (approximately 1800 per year).
In addition, Wythenshawe contains the first purpose-built heart and lung transplant unit in the country, and is a supra-regional centre for heart and lung transplantation. CTCCU also houses an ECMO service - one of only 5 nationally designated centres. It has also been chosen as a centre for ventricular assist device insertion in advanced heart failure cases.
The junior staff on the unit, on a day-to-day basis, includes both a cardiothoracic modular anaesthetic SpR, a clinical fellow in ICM or anaesthesia, and a cardiothoracic surgical SpR. There is full secretarial support to the ICU and full IT access, including to the University Intranet and Trust Intranet.
There are all the usual facilities commensurate with cardiothoracic critical care including bronchoscopy, echocardiography, mechanical left and right heart support, advanced and non-invasive respiratory support and renal replacement therapy.
