Full Job Description

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to join Gorseland's Specialist Support Unit as a Specialist Support Unit Class Teacher. We are very pleased to have two specialist education units commissioned by the Local Authority at our provision: a Reception/Key Stage One Specialist Unit and a Key Stage Two Cognition and Learning Unit. The children have EHCPs and a range of complex needs that are met in our small-group learning environments, split across three classes based on the child's stage rather than their age. The role is suitable for teachers who have a particular interest in teaching children with complex special educational needs. Experience teaching in a specialist provision is essential to the role. The KS2 class offers whole class and small-group learning, delivered in a more formal style with inclusive lessons in line with the children's individual needs and abilities. Additional targeted interventions include: handwriting, spelling and communication sessions. Suitable mainstream integration opportunities are provided and particularly successful sessions are often related to social communication e.g. assemblies, playtimes and weekly class council meetings. Mainstream integration for lessons related to a specific area of the curriculum can be considered and this would be on an individual basis in collaboration with parents and carers.

  • have knowledge and experience of primary teaching and SEND or special school or specialist unit teaching
  • have excellent teaching skills particularly in early literacy and numeracy,
  • be skilled in managing and understanding behaviour, including social emotional needs
  • work as part of a team
  • be flexible, passionate, skilled and committed to working with children with SEND
  • be able to plan and deliver a specialised curriculum to children with complex learning difficulties including writing personalised targets and making accurate assessments
  • have knowledge of SEND strategies to help children develop to their full potential in all areas.
