Full Job Description

  • Work with babies, children and young people (0-25) with vision impairment to overcome barriers to learning and ensure full access to the curriculum and wider school activities - including adapting resources, producing tactile diagrams, enlarging print, and transcribing to Braille.
  • Deliver and adapt specialist learning activities, including communication, social skills, mobility, touch typing, ILS, and Braille teaching, in collaboration with the Specialist Teacher for Vision Impairment.
  • Provide guidance, modelling, and coaching to school and setting staff to improve inclusive practice and promote effective learning for children with vision impairment.
  • Organise and manage specialist learning environments, resources, ICT and low-vision equipment to support high-quality access to learning.
  • Build positive relationships with children, young people and families, giving constructive feedback on progress and contributing to reviews, meetings and multi-agency work.
  • Lead or support awareness-raising sessions in schools to promote understanding and inclusion for vision-impaired learners.
  • Maintain accurate records, support exam access arrangements, contribute to out-of-school learning activities, and engage in continuous professional development within the area of vision inclusion.

    An HLTA qualification (or equivalent level 4 or above), and willingness to achieve the Contracted Braille qualification (Grade 2) within required timescales.
  • Knowledge of vision impairment and its impact on learning, development, mobility, communication and access to the curriculum.
  • Knowledge of child development, learning processes, and national/early years curriculum frameworks (including Post-16).
  • Experience working with vision-impaired children and using specialist resources, technologies, and low-vision aids.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with children, families, teachers and professionals.
  • Excellent organisational skills, flexibility, creativity and the ability to problem-solve and manage interventions effectively.
  • A full driving licence and access to a car or mobility support to work flexibly across Gateshead.

The Low Incidence Needs Team (LINT) is part of Gateshead's SEN Inclusion Team and provides specialist support for children and young people aged 0-25 with hearing, vision, multi-sensory, physical or medical needs. The team works across mainstream and special school settings, offering expert advice, tailored interventions and meaningful support to families, schools and early years providers. As a Specialist Sensory Teaching Assistant for Vision Impairment, you will play a key role in helping vision-impaired learners access learning, develop independence and participate fully in school life. Working alongside experienced specialist teachers, you'll contribute to personalised learning plans, adapt resources, promote inclusion and provide hands-on support that makes a real difference to children, young people and their families.

    Salary £32,061 - £34,434 + SSA £1,539, pro rata to term time working. Location will be Gateshead Civic Centre and working into schools and settings across the Gateshead Borough.,
