Service specific skills, tasks or procedures required are: Deliver intravitreal injections in accordance with OUH policies, standard operating procedures, PGDs (where applicable), and national guidance. Undertake pre procedure preparation, including confirmation of: patient identity indication and prescribed therapy laterality and drug verification consent status Take informed, written consent for intravitreal injection treatment as part of the prescribed therapy, in line with OUH Consent Policy and professional guidance, ensuring patient understanding and capacity are appropriately assessed and documented. Maintain a safe clinical environment through strict adherence to aseptic technique, infection prevention and control standards. Identify, manage and escalate complications or adverse events in accordance with local escalation pathways. Provide post procedure advice, safety netting and written information to patients. Record all clinical activity accurately on OUH electronic systems, ensuring contemporaneous documentation. Administer, assess and prescribe medications, within scope of practice for service [if required] Develop and deliver a high-quality practitioner led clinic in the Intravitreal Injection Service. Line management and/or supervision of clinical support workers in the service. Be flexible within the Intravitreal Injection Service to ensure appropriate specialist cover.

We are seeking knowledgeable, experienced and motivated Senior Specialist Nurses / Senior Specialist Practitioners to join our ophthalmology team, with a primary focus on delivering intravitreal injection therapy within a dedicated clinical setting. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinician to play a pivotal role in supporting patients with a range of retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, ensuring timely, safe, and high-quality treatment delivery. The post holder will work autonomously within agreed protocols to assess patients, obtain informed consent, and administer intravitreal injections, maintaining the highest standards of clinical care and patient safety. You will act as a clinical expert, contributing to service development, mentoring junior staff, and supporting the delivery of efficient, patient-centred pathways. Strong communication skills, clinical judgement, and a commitment to continual professional development are essential, as you will liaise closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to optimise outcomes and enhance patient experience. If you have a strong clinical background in ophthalmology be that as a nurse, an allied health professional or healthcare scientist but do not currently have experience as an intravitreal injector, full training will be given to ensure you become a competent, confident and safe practitioner.,

  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or AHP (HCPC) First level degree (HEI Level 5 or 6) in undergraduate base profession Demonstrable evidence of ability to study at Level 7 (either previous Level 6 or level 7 study). Relevant specialist (post basic) academic programme (up to MSc level) relevant to recruiting clinical area/speciality. Supervision, Mentoring or Facilitating Workplace Learning Qualification, Leadership Course or Qualification Advanced Life Support Course or other, relevant to speciality Completed MSc relevant to clinical area or speciality Registered Independent/ Non-medical Prescriber, Significant consolidated experience within ophthalmology Proven evidence of management ability and leadership skills. Excellent clinical and practical skills Awareness of clinical governance issues and measures of quality Experience of clinical governance practices, audit, service evaluation or quality improvement in clinical practice Ability to appraise evidence, using analytical and problem-solving skills to inform decision-making, and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands, Experience of change management Demonstrable evidence of research capability, or the application of research evidence to own clinical practice Existing experience of administering intravitreal injections, Commitment to studying for any required Level 7 post-graduate training needed. Commitment to evidencing own professional development, capabilities and competency development via work-based assessments and use of a portfolio. Willingness to engage in clinical supervision to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours across the breadth of the four pillars of practice Ability to recognise and analyse complex situations, utilising decision-making skills to take appropriate action Enthusiasm towards teaching and sharing knowledge with others in the MDT Demonstration of leadership in clinical practice Ability to recognise own limitations, working within scope of practice, acting on feedback from clinical supervisors when required. Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, which may include days/weekends or nights, as required to complete training and clinical supervision in practice, and dependent on service needs.
