Specialist Paediatric Respiratory Nurse - Respiratory Neurodisability

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 0.75 WTE (28 hours a week) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our paediatric respiratory multidisciplinary team, working across the Children's Hospital, including the general and respiratory wards and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The post holder will play a key leadership role in delivering high-quality, expert care for children and young people with respiratory neurodisability and their families. They will manage a specialist caseload of children who require respiratory support as part of their neurodisability and who meet the service's referral criteria. The role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to coordinate care, optimise resources, and ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care. Working both autonomously and collaboratively, the successful candidate will provide expert clinical leadership, specialist advice, and practical support to children, young people, and their families throughout their care journey. The Children's Hospital at The Royal London Hospital is a tertiary referral centre providing specialist paediatric services in general and neonatal surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, and plastic surgery. We care for patients admitted via our busy Paediatric Emergency Department and inpatient wards, as well as referrals from Whipps Cross Hospital, Newham Hospital, and other district general hospitals., This role is specifically focused on supporting the respiratory management of children with neurodisability who meet the following criteria:

• Two or more Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) admissions within a 12-month period with a primary respiratory diagnosis (as determined by a respiratory consultant); or
• Three or more inpatient admissions within a 12-month period with a primary respiratory diagnosis (as determined by a respiratory consultant).
The successful candidate will work autonomously, leading and managing a defined caseload of patients. They will be responsible for undertaking comprehensive clinical assessments, accurately documenting and communicating findings, identifying patients whose condition is deteriorating, and taking appropriate action in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team. The post holder will coordinate the Respiratory Neurodisability Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) clinic, ensuring effective planning, communication, and continuity of care. They will develop, implement, and regularly review personalised respiratory care and escalation plans to support children, young people, and their families across hospital and community settings. The role also includes prescribing and coordinating oxygen therapy, working closely with community teams to ensure the safe provision, ongoing management, and review of home oxygen and other respiratory support.
