These are newly created Specialist Doctor posts developed as part of the Medical Workforce productivity programme. Specialist doctors are senior and experienced clinicians who will work autonomously to a level of defined competencies, as agreed within local clinical governance frameworks. Specialists will be responsible for patients in their areas of practice as an 'expert decision maker'. Specialist doctors provide expertise in a specialised area, whether delivering care in a specific specialty or in a generalist service and will manage the full range of presentations in their area of practice. The role will primarily focus on providing direct clinical care, meeting service delivery and improvement requirements. However, the role will be supported by suitable development opportunities including management roles and leadership responsibilities in, teaching, academia research and service development. The details of the balance between clinical care and other elements of the role would be discussed during the job planning process. Specialist doctors are also expected to be involved in deliver teaching and training of others. They will be able to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, leading MDTs where appropriate. Specialist doctors are required to actively engage in CPD activities both internally and externally to their organisations. A special interest will be encouraged and is negotiable. The post can be full time, maximum part time or job share by negotiation. The post holder will be managerially responsible to the Clinical Director and professionally responsible to Dr Dom Hurford Medical Director. The post holder will be required to work closely with senior medical colleagues in all the District General Hospitals as appropriate and to liaise with other senior clinicians within and beyond the UHB as and when necessary. The posts will be based as indicated above. The post holder will be expected to work at other Health Board premises and at other sites within the district as required. Office accommodation with dedicated IT facilities are provided at all bases. Electronic patient records are used in some areas of ENT & Head & Neck services but the post holder will be expected to use whatever records system is in use in the clinical area where they are working. There is ample access to appropriate IT systems in all offices and clinical areas. E-mail, internet access and electronic access to clinical information systems will be available. The post is supported by full time administrative and secretarial staff.
