Are you a registered nurse or midwife looking to develop your career in public health nursing?

Barnsley 0 -19 Public Health Nursing Service is seeking enthusiastic, motivated and resilient Registered Nurses or Midwives to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme in Health Visiting or School Nursing, commencing September 2026. We are excited to be able to offer the opportunity for places for 2 Students: 1 in Health Visiting, and 1 in School Nursing

This is an exciting opportunity to build on your existing professional knowledge and experience, develop specialist public health practice, and contribute to improving outcomes for children, young people, families and communities across Barnsley.

We are particularly interested in applicants who are passionate about reducing health inequalities, supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable children and families, delivering the Healthy Child Programme, and developing leadership skills within a dynamic and innovative public health nursing service.

Main duties of the job

The SCPHN programme is a full-time, fixed-term course delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. The programme includes academic study and practice-based learning and is subject to successful University application and approval.

Students will work towards achieving NMC registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in either Health Visiting or School Nursing. The programme requires commitment, resilience and the ability to undertake independent study, including self-directed research, reading, preparation, written assessments and practice learning.

Within the practice setting, students will be supported by a practice supervisor and assessed by a qualified assessor in line with NMC standards for learning and assessment.
