Full Job Description

Use your audit, risk, digital or controls expertise to support Weldmar Hospicecare as a Specialist Adviser., Weldmar Hospicecare is seeking to appoint Specialist Advisers to join its audit committee, strengthening the depth of expertise across risk, internal controls and assurance. The audit committee plays a critical role in ensuring that Weldmar's financial and management controls are robust, its risk framework is effective and appropriate assurance is in place. It also oversees the annual report and audit process, providing the Board with confidence in governance and compliance. This is an important time to contribute. Weldmar is in a strong financial position and investing in key developments, including a new outpatient facility, a refreshed fundraising strategy and a significant programme of digital and IT transformation. As the organisation evolves, the committee's role in overseeing risk, including emerging areas such as digital systems and AI, is increasingly important. As a Specialist Adviser, you will use your experience to support trustees and senior leadership in reaching sound decisions. You will provide independent insight, constructive challenge and specialist knowledge, helping to strengthen oversight across areas such as internal audit, risk management, fraud, whistleblowing and organisational controls. This is a voluntary advisory role and does not carry the trustee's legal responsibilities. Instead, it offers a valuable opportunity to contribute at board level and may provide a pathway to future trustee roles.

We are seeking individuals who can bring relevant expertise alongside a collaborative, thoughtful and values-led approach. You will have experience in areas such as internal audit, risk management, financial or operational controls, or fraud, compliance and whistleblowing frameworks. You may also bring experience of digital, IT or AI oversight, particularly where this intersects with organisational risk. You will be comfortable interpreting and constructively challenging assurance, audit or risk information at a strategic level. We are open to a wide range of professional backgrounds. This could include experience within internal audit or assurance functions, legal or governance roles, or operational and customer-facing risk environments such as retail. You may also be working in a senior leadership role within a complex organisation and looking to apply your skills in a non-executive capacity. Above all, we are interested in how you think and contribute, rather than a specific job title or sector background. You may already have non-executive or committee experience or be looking to take a first step into a portfolio career. We are particularly focused on finding the right fit for the committee. You will bring the ability to offer constructive challenge in a supportive and respectful way, alongside strong judgement and the ability to see the bigger picture. This role would suit someone who enjoys contributing their expertise in a meaningful way, working alongside others to support strong governance and decision-making.

Weldmar Hospicecare is an independent local charity that cares for people living with a life limiting illness, such as cancer, heart disease, or motor neurone disease. We also support the loved ones of our patients. Our individually tailored care - where we focus on the person, not just their symptoms and illness - takes place in patients' own homes, in community hospitals and care homes and at our inpatient unit in Dorchester. Weldmar supports more than two thousand people across the north, south and west of Dorset each year. All our care is provided free of charge. We help people live as good a life as possible when their illness cannot be cured. Our team of staff includes specialist nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, counsellors, chefs, maintenance engineers, complementary therapists, retail professionals and experts in fundraising, marketing, finance, people services and more. A number of dedicated volunteers support us in many aspects of our work. As an independent charity, we rely on donations, fundraising events and our charity shops to fund our work. We have been providing our care for the people of Dorset since 1994 and our services are rated as 'Outstanding' by the CQC., Placing purpose and quality before profit, Peridot Partners is a values-led third sector executive recruitment agency transforming leadership and inspiring change with organisations that have a social purpose. We challenge the status quo about what makes good leadership, and this is reflected in our exceptional clients, candidates and close community of change-makers. Since 2009, we have worked with organisations that want to grow and who appreciate and value good leadership, across the public, third and private sectors. The strength of our organisation comes from our cross-functional networks, our exceptional research team and our experience attracting people from all sectors to organisations with a social focus. We recruit to boards, executive positions and specialist functional roles such as fundraising, finance, and marketing and communications across a range of sectors, from social justice and health charities, foundations, grant-making organisations and think tanks to awarding bodies, training providers, schools, multi-academy trusts, colleges and universities, and student unions., "The Executive Team recruited by Peridot are fantastic! • Be brave - We champion and challenge in our own individual ways to improve outcomes for ourselves and our clients.
  • Bring rigour - We're thorough, thoughtful and speak up for what's right.
  • See the bigger picture - We build real partnerships and work together for long term success.

We develop long-term, deep-rooted relationships that bring real value to our partners across socially focused sectors. Diversity at our heart We do not believe in throwaway statements about diversity. Instead, diversity is at the heart of everything we do and is crucial to our success, reputation, and the organisations and people we work with. We understand that it is not good enough to simply not discriminate and we must do more to create positive change. With this in mind, we are proud that we have been actively working to become an Anti-Racist and more inclusive organisation. We recognise that unconscious bias exists and must be minimised. We have put processes in place to manage them. We have a position of influence as a recruitment company to make our positive contribution to change the systems that perpetuate discrimination, and with that comes a responsibility to do better. We work tirelessly to ensure we lead inclusive campaigns and projects that can encourage all members of society to apply and know that they will be treated with decency and respect. We support equal opportunities in employment and oppose all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination based on gender, age, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability. We believe that a diverse not for profit sector will provide better leadership to accelerate positive change in society. We are proud to have an exceptional track record of leading inclusive recruitment campaigns that enhance diversity of leadership teams and boards. As a recruitment partner, you can expect us to:
  • Constructively challenge you if you have exclusive and restrictive criteria in your role profiles.
  • Ensure the advertising materials for your role use inclusive language and imagery.
  • Promote your role within sector-specific networking forums wherever possible (e.g. women, global ethnic majority, disabled and LGBTQIA+ networks).
  • Put diversity at the heart of the projects we are undertaking when talking to your staff and board to ensure we are reflecting the people and communities you work with and for.
  • Challenge inappropriate behaviour, practice and comments where required.
  • Make reasonable adjustments as needed.
  • Our commitment to building diverse organisations starts with us, and we are proud that women, LGBTQ+, disabled and people from ethnic minorities consider Peridot a great place to work.
