Full Job Description

The post holder will be required to primarily provide cover for schools within Crawley and Mid Sussex.

The post holder will work as a Special School Staff Nurse under the direction of Special School Nurses to support the provision of health care to children and young people in Special Schools, ensuring arrangements are in place to support those with medical conditions.

The post holder will provide clinical and public health nursing for children and young people, in partnership with Special School Nurses, the Clinical Lead, Community Children's Nurses, Community Paediatricians and other health professionals to ensure safe, high quality care.

They will liaise with clinical experts to access specialist knowledge, skills and leadership as required.

The post holder will advise and support school staff with everyday health care needs. They may have a delegated caseload and/or support ad hoc work with supervision, working as an autonomous practitioner while liaising with the Named Special School Nurse.

They will assess health care needs and develop and implement health care plans, ensuring plans are updated and care delivered accordingly.

They will support staff learning, including competency-based assessment, enabling equitable access to education and health services.

They will support teaching, mentorship and supervision of staff and students, and safeguard children in lineThe Children Act' (1989 & 2004) and 'Working Together to Safeguard Children' (2013 & 2023).

Main duties of the job

Work within level of competency to deliver quality nursing care, support, information and advice for a supervised and/or delegated SSN caseload, ensuring appropriate resources are available.

Provide clinical children's nursing and public health advice within the school setting.

Develop and implement care plans for children and young people with complex health needs and disability.

Identify and provide child-specific health care procedures training for school staff, including competency-based assessment where required.

Help develop, implement and review clinical protocols and standard operating procedures to support safe care and best nursing practice.

Contribute to single and multiagency safeguarding of disabled children, young people and young adults.

Support the delivery of health promotion packages appropriate for a Special School setting.

Ensure timely, concise and accurate documentation of care interventions, including telephone advice and support.

Act as a resource and role model of special school nursing to professionals and colleagues.

Attend relevant education and training updates to support development and clinical practice standards.

Staff may be required to work across West Sussex and Brighton and Hove, and elsewhere within the Trust if required.

Participate in clinical and safeguarding supervision as per Trust policy.
