Full Job Description
As a Special Constable, you will work closely with regular officers to police local communities. You would have the same powers and wear the same uniform as a regular police officer; be given proper training for the role and gain a thorough grounding in many aspects of police work, before you are expected to carry out any police duties. Being a Special Constable is a challenging and rewarding role and we are looking for people who can empathise with others and listen to their needs. As a Special Constable, you will take part in frontline police work either as a response & patrol or neighbourhoods officer. This could mean anything from keeping town centres safe at night, conducting house-to-house enquiries, helping prevent vulnerable members of the community from becoming victims of crime, patrolling in crime hotspots, or taking part in crime-prevention initiatives. It's a role with the potential to send you home every shift with a tangible feeling of pride, knowing you've
volunteered to make a real difference in the community you serve. Being a Special Constable is a voluntary role. Special Constables are required to commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, this equates to 192 hours per year. These hours are usually worked alongside a regular shift. Some people join the Constabulary to be a career Special Constable and others join as it opens up opportunities to develop skills and experience needed to serve in other roles such as a police officer. Whatever your reason for joining you will be part of the policing family and a valued member of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, an organisation that is committed to the wellbeing of all its officers, staff and volunteers.
This role is subject to satisfactory vetting clearance. While you don't need any specific qualifications, it is important that you're professional under pressure; able to work with others, assess information, consider options and make clear, justifiable decisions. You must meet our eligibility criteria and pass the assessment process. As well as a medical examination, there is also a fitness test which you must pass (this will be repeated annually). Competencies for the role In evaluating applications we assess against the following Competencies and Personal Qualities.
