Sociology & Criminology Internship - Module Development Assistant

The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students from the Department of Sociology (and Criminology), to apply you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role. An opportunity has arisen for an 8-week internship with the Drugs, Policy and Social Change (DPSC). The successful candidate will be an integral member of the DPSC Research Group, working on the annual GMTRENDS (Greater Manchester Testing and Research on Emerging and New DrugS) research project. The multi-method research includes interviews with professionals who work with people who use drugs. This opportunity is to work on conducting the professional interviews. This will include arranging, conducting, summarising and analysing the findings. Further information regarding GMTRENDS can be found here: https://gmtrends.mmu.ac.uk/ The intern will gain experience of all aspects of qualitative research from the arranging and conducting interviews, transcription and summary of interviews, and the writing up of findings. The work will lead to them being named as a co-author of the research report. The successful candidate will be provided with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of local substance use trends. They will gain experience of conducting research and working in a research team. This will enhance their CV through developing their academic skills and confidence. Successful students will be invited to attend an interview in early May 2026 (details to be confirmed). Date(s): 18 May 2026 - 3 July 2026 Hours of Work: flexible but typically at least one day a week, up to two days a week. Please Note - As part of the 2026 Sociology Internship offering, priority will be given to Level 5 & 6 students who have specified in the Careers Registration survey (this is completed during enrolment and cannot be changed at this time) that they have had no work experience in the last 12 months and would like some on campus work or a short work placement and those who have not worked via Jobs4Students previously. However, applications are welcomed from all students meeting the criteria below. Students are only eligible to undertake one Sociology Internship. This role is only open to current Manchester Met students from the Department of Sociology (and Criminology) who meet the following requirements:

• Are a third year undergraduate student in the Department of Criminology and Sociology
• Have an interest in the topic of substance use - this may include having taken the 2nd year unit 'Illegal Drugs'.
• Have knowledge or experience of qualitive research
• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Have excellent organisational skills
