Senior Lecturer in Clinical Legal Education

Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Legal Education to join our forward thinking, inclusive Russell Group Law School. The Law School has a strong tradition of pro bono, student outreach and community engagement activity. Our intention is to build on that work and develop a Newcastle Law School Community Clinic offer. We are looking for someone who can help design, shape and ultimately lead this Clinic. You will also be expected to contribute to the development of clinical and practice-based legal education, working closely with academic colleagues and external partners to embed real-world learning across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, to help in the design and assessment of professional legal or transferable skills across the curriculum and to help oversee co/extracurricular activities under the umbrella of the Community Clinic where appropriate. We welcome applications from people with a traditional academic research background with experience in pro bono type work in a university setting or from a legal professional practice background with management and leadership experience that includes elements of pro bono/clinic work, training and teaching., Clinic Related Responsibilities

• Develop the Community Clinic provision in the law school
• Provide strategic direction and leadership for the community clinic, including developing strategic partnerships, promotion and recruitment of students for clinic activity and overseeing and supporting student work
• Develop and maintain links with the University Community Hub, the legal profession, voluntary sector organisations, local government etc to enhance community clinic and educational opportunities
• Teaching & Learning
• Provide a high-quality teaching and learning experience for our students
• Lead the development of clinical legal education and working closely with academic colleagues and students support profession skills development across the curriculum and extra-curricular activities
Supervise student dissertations and/or group work
• Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of academic adviser
• Contribute to teaching, assessment and curriculum development across our undergraduate degree
• Engage in subject, professional and pedagogic training as required to enhance teaching and learning provision
• Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated

• Operate as an active and present citizen in the Newcastle Law School community
• Have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an understanding of how individual behaviour can contribute to a positive research and education culture
• Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, scholarship and/or engagement
• Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees
• Ability and skill to develop sustained relationships, including with internal colleagues, external partners and organisations
  
  Sustained experience working as a legal academic or legal practitioner
• Demonstrable experience of designing/delivering pro bono, clinical or experiential legal education/activity
• Evidence or the potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students
• A strong record of leadership in higher education or professional practice
• A strong record of engaging with legal, voluntary sector organisations or local government agencies
• Skills in organisation and teamwork
• Ability to supervise research projects or group work
• Excellent written and oral communication skills (assessed at interview)
• Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills (assessed at interview)
• Ability to strengthen ties between the law school and legal practice, voluntary sector organisations, local government etc to enhance community clinic and educational opportunities, A UK qualifying law degree or equivalent (i.e. UK law degree conversion)
• A full UK professional legal qualification with relevant post qualification experience (PQE) or a completed PhD in Law
• A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area/role (Desirable)
• HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience and willingness to work towards recognised teaching qualification) (Desirable)
