Full Job Description

A Paediatric Emergency Department Healthcare Support Worker works as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist in the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care to children presenting with acute illness or injury. The role involves supporting registered nurses and doctors in both clinical and non-clinical tasks, ensuring patients are cared for in a timely and child-centred manner. The post holder helps maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised environment, contributes to monitoring patients' conditions, and supports the emotional wellbeing of children and their families during often stressful situations. Working in a busy and unpredictable environment, the Healthcare Support Worker must be adaptable, calm under pressure, and able to respond quickly to changing priorities while maintaining high standards of care., Direct Patient Care

  • Assist with basic care needs (washing, feeding, toileting, comforting children)
  • Help monitor children's condition (e.g. temperature, pulse, breathing rates)
  • Support children who are distressed, in pain, or anxious
  • Assist with moving and handling patients safely
  • Supporting Clinical Procedures
  • Prepare equipment for treatments and procedures
  • Assist nurses/doctors during examinations or minor procedures
  • Clean and dress wounds (under supervision)
  • Take basic observations and record results accurately
  • Child-Focused Care
  • Communicate in a child-friendly, reassuring way
  • Provide emotional support to both children and parents/carers
  • Help distract children during procedures (e.g. play, conversation)
  • Ensure safeguarding principles are followed at all times
  • Infection Control & Cleanliness
  • Clean and disinfect equipment and clinical areas
  • Follow strict hygiene and infection prevention protocols
  • Safely dispose of clinical waste
  • Administrative & Support Tasks
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Stock and organise supplies
  • Escort patients between departments (e.g. to X-ray/ward transfers)
  • Assist with admissions and discharges
