- Participate in the initial assessment and management of patients, supervising more junior members of the team.
- To lead inpatient ward rounds to ensure the on-going clinical management of patients is appropriate. To support the discharge of patients, to a place of safety, in a timely manner.
- Participate in or lead the acute take, to provide senior clinical decisions, with the support of consultant clinicians.
- Contribute to the Medical Emergency Team (MET). Lead cardiac arrest calls.
- Contribute to GIM/medical speciality clinics.
- Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties.
- Advise junior trainees and ANPs about management of patients.
- Develop skills in managing the ward to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patients. Professional Responsibilities

The position will enable the Respiratory Department to continue to develop high quality Respiratory services in a large teaching secondary care hospital that has been completely rebuilt with states of the arts facilities and cardiac diagnostics. The appointee will be expected to have extensive general Respiratory medicine training and experience with competency and subspecialty experience in all aspects of Respiratory condition management. Primary Care Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital. Community Services Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre. Specialist Regional Services We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.
Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at the time of appointment. The respiratory department has a total of 91 inpatient beds on three wards, 2B, 2C and 2D. The physician appointed to this post will deliver daily sessions of care to respiratory inpatients on the wards above on a rotational basis. Ward 2C houses the respiratory support unit for up to 6 patients and can provide respiratory support including, NIV, CPAP, and high flow nasal oxygen therapy. The unit is supported by a well-trained respiratory nurse team and is consultant lead 7 days a week. The entire Consultant Respiratory team has moved to a "seven day" model of care, with separate inpatient/outpatient periods on a rotating basis, 24 hour on call respiratory consultant is available for telephone advice. This innovation has promoted ambulatory care for patients with respiratory disease, improved the quality of inpatient care, reduced length of stay, and forged more cohesive day to day working relationships between the AMU staff and respiratory teams. In the Respiratory department model of care seven full time Respiratory Consultants are available Monday-Friday to provide inpatient and outpatient care, and ten Consultants are available for the weekend commitment.
