Full Job Description

Applications are invited from individuals seeking specialist training in Hand and Wrist Surgery. The Plastic Surgery Department at St Thomas' have five Plastics Hand Surgery Consultants performing a wide range of hand and wrist procedures for elective and trauma patients. The workload will involve assessing and managing hand trauma in our Hand Trauma Unit and Day Surgery Unit. There will be equal exposure to elective work which includes, for example, treatment for nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytren's disease, post-trauma reconstruction, arthroplasty, wrist arthroscopy, open wrist surgery and Epidermolysis Bullosa. The post is based at St Thomas' training predominantly in adult hand and wrist surgery, but there will also be opportunities to visit the Evelina Children's Hospital (within St Thomas') to gain exposure to congenital hand surgery and to visit the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, to observe brachial plexus/peripheral nerve management.

Fellowships have particular emphasis on clinical exposure to multi-disciplinary management. You will gain excellent training in both clinic and theatre, with the aim of training you to assess, perform and manage a range of hand surgery procedures.

Due to the clinical demands of this post, it is aimed at individuals who have completed their FRCS (Plast) or who are post-accreditation, but seeking further specialist hand surgery training. We would encourage all fellows to undertake the British or European Hand Diploma.

As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.
