Senior Clinical Fellow in Children's Emergency Medicine

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated doctor to join our Paediatric Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service within the Children's Emergency Department at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), on a six-month fixed-term appointment. As a Senior Clinical Fellow, you will play a key role in assessing, investigating and treating children and young people presenting with acute illness. You will support timely clinical decision-making, enabling suitable patients to receive treatment and return home safely on the same day, while recognising those who require admission or further specialist input. You will provide middle-grade clinical support within Paediatric SDEC, working closely with consultants, nursing colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team. The role will focus on delivering safe, effective care, supporting patient flow and avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions. Clear communication with children and families, appropriate safety-netting and safeguarding will be central to your practice. During this six-month appointment, you will have opportunities to contribute to the development of Paediatric SDEC pathways, departmental teaching, clinical audit and quality improvement. You will also support and supervise junior colleagues, helping to maintain a supportive and inclusive working environment.Main duties of the job The post holder will provide middle-grade clinical care within Paediatric Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), assessing and managing children and young people with acute illness, with consultant support and supervision. Although the primary focus of the role is Paediatric SDEC, the post holder may also be required to support the wider Children's Emergency Department according to clinical demand and service needs, undertaking duties appropriate to their competence and experience. Main duties will include:

• Assessing, investigating and treating children and young people, supporting timely clinical decisions and safe same-day discharge where appropriate.
• Identifying patients who require admission, specialist review or urgent escalation, and arranging appropriate ongoing care.
• Communicating clearly with children, young people and their families, providing advice, safety-netting and follow-up arrangements.
• Working closely with medical, nursing and wider multidisciplinary colleagues to support safe patient flow across Paediatric SDEC and the Children's Emergency Department.
• Recognising and responding to safeguarding concerns in accordance with Trust procedures.
• Maintaining accurate clinical records and ensuring effective handover of care.
• Supporting and supervising junior colleagues, escalating clinical concerns to the responsible consultant when required.
