Bristol NHS Foundation Trust are pleased to offer this 9 month fixed term position for a Senior Clinical Fellow to join the Cardiology team at the Bristol Heart Institute to start in October 2026.

The post-holder will have opportunities for training in coronary angiography, echocardiography, complex imaging, electrophysiology and pacing depending on the interests and experience of the successful candidate.

The appointee will join a team of 11 cardiology registrars, including national trainees, and will look after cardiology inpatients, carry out outpatient clinics, and be part of the cardiology oncall rota throughout the post.

The Bristol Heart Institute is a state-of-the art £57m centre dedicated to cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiac imaging and cardiovascular research. The Department of Cardiology provides a secondary and tertiary service for Bristol and the surrounding areas. The facilityincludes two cardiology wards and five dedicated catheterisation labs. The BHI also provides the 24/7 primary angioplasty service for the immediate catchment and the wider network. Outpatient clinics for general cardiology, as well as specialised clinics including heart failure, valvular heart disease, electrophysiology (EP), intervention and Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) take place in the BHI. A consultant led, post-take cardiology ward round is provided for all emergency admissions with a cardiac problem. This environment provides excellent opportunities for training.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join a team of 11 cardiology registrars including national trainees. The post will involve secondary and tertiary Cardiology, a full range of interests are represented including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, imaging, adult congenital heart disease and heart failure. The post holder will input to ward patients, outpatient clinics, and the on-call rota (approximately 1 in 11 - subject to change). There will be opportunities for training in coronary angiography, echocardiography, adult congenital heart disease, complex imaging, electrophysiology and pacing depending on the interests and experience of the successful candidate.

The post is based in the Bristol Heart Institute which provides secondary and tertiary cardiac services in a purpose-built environment. We have 2 cardiology wards, 6 dedicated catheterisation labs and provide Cardiology for the population of south Bristol and North Somerset along with tertiary referrals from the whole of the Avon, Gloucester, Wiltshire and Somerset Cardiac Network. There are excellent opportunities for training.The trainee would be expected to look after the cardiology inpatients on the ward in addition to taking part in outpatient clinics. Specialist sessions such as echocardiography, MRI, CT, coronary angiography and pacing may be possible depending on the skills of the applicant. The post holder will also be expected to support the new Same Day Emergency Care service the department has set up.
