Full Job Description

To be an efficient, flexible member of the laboratory and wider Pathology service providing a consistently high quality and professional service. The specific aim of the Senior BMS Band 7 role is to work alongside Consultant Pathologist and to dissect Cat A - C specimens independently as well as having knowledge and skills in complex dissection. To manage and supervise specimen reception, dealing with queries in a timely manner in order to maintain patient care and prevent delays. Assist with managing the day-to-day operations of a specific area of a laboratory service, at the hub or spoke laboratory, as an integral element of Pathology. To be responsible for providing specialist knowledge, alongside technical expertise to aid in the training and development of technical staff. To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continual Professional Development (CPD) To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality., Specialist Knowledge - Dissection

  • Provide specialist scientific knowledge and work as a member of the team to assess, plan and contribute to the provision of a specialized service.
  • Assist the Service Manager, Technical Lead in the routine management of specimen reception and dissection room
  • Undertake routine laboratory work within the section ensuring the work is performed in an efficient, organised and professional manner to provide a high quality, timely service.
  • Train and mentor more junior members of BMS staff and doctors in training as required in specimen dissection.
  • Assist in preparation and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other quality documentation relating to BMS Dissection, helping to ensure adherence to internal quality key performance indicators for document control.
  • Provide advice to both internal and external colleagues on the suitability of specimens for analysis and the correct specimen pathway required.
  • Work in compliance with local health and safety rules to ensure a safe working environment. Adhere to department, directorate and Board Health and Safety policies (including COSHH, Risk assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) and to report any non-compliances to the Service Manager or Technical Lead.
