Full Job Description

A specialist SEND school in St Helens is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to join their team. The school supports children and young people with a range of complex learning needs, including autism, severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), and communication needs.

This is a rewarding opportunity to support pupils in accessing a highly personalised curriculum designed to develop independence, communication, life skills, and emotional wellbeing within a safe and nurturing environment.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping pupils access meaningful learning experiences and achieve their individual goals. Working closely with Teachers, Therapists, and support staff, you will provide tailored support throughout the school day., Support pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis across a sensory, functional, and personalised curriculum.
- Implement communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton, British Sign Language (BSL), and AAC systems where appropriate.
- Support pupils with sensory regulation and engagement in learning activities.
- Follow individual education plans, therapy programmes, and behaviour support strategies.
- Assist with personal care, moving and handling, feeding, and hydrotherapy sessions where required.
- Promote pupils' independence, social development, and emotional wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively with Teachers, Therapists, and other Learning Support Assistants to provide a consistent and supportive learning environment.

Have experience supporting children, young people, or adults with learning disabilities, autism, or complex needs.
- Demonstrate a calm, patient, proactive, and resilient approach.
- Be committed to delivering person-centred support.
- Be comfortable supporting personal care and moving and handling duties.
- Have excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Have the right to work in the UK and full-time availability.

Desirable Qualifications and Training
- PECS, Makaton, BSL, or AAC training.
- Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification.
- MAPA, Team Teach, or similar positive behaviour support/de-escalation training.
- Moving and Handling training.
