Full Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced teacher of singing to join an outstanding team of visiting music teachers supporting our thriving Music department, from September 2026. This position is offered on a self-employed basis via a contract of services.
The successful candidate will teach one-to-one vocal lessons to pupils in the Senior School, from Year 9 to Year 13. There is currently approximately one day of teaching required, on a self-employed basis.
To be successful in this role you will have relevant qualifications, coupled with a genuine passion for teaching children, as well as excellent organisation and communication skills. The successful candidate will have a qualification in performance as a vocalist to at least degree level or hold a BA or equivalent degree in academic music. A teaching qualification is also desirable.
We aspire to deliver exceptional every day, whilst creating a welcoming and supportive environment where individuals can thrive, find their exceptional, and be celebrated. Our 3 cornerstone values are Humility, Engagement and Kindness. If this sounds like a cultural fit for you, and you meet the job requirements, we would love to hear from you.
THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Taunton School Music Department is committed to offering exceptional opportunities for all musicians. The department is housed in a standalone facility, with an outstanding recital room under current refurbishment to the very latest specifications.
Five full-time teachers run a vibrant programme of academic and co-curricular study, and specific provision for singers includes a Chapel Choir which performs in services, concerts, in external venues in the local area and on tour to Bath and Oxford; Taunton School Chorus - a large un-auditioned choir performing oratorios with orchestra as well as other repertoire; an Advanced Vocal Ensemble, the 'Tauntones' (boys' choir), and a Musical Theatre Club.
Large scale musical productions with live band and a professional technical team take place at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton, and many of our concert performances are hosted in the beautiful school chapel, often with accompaniment from the school organist. The Advent and Christmas Carol Services are highlights of the calendar. Taunton School singers collaborated this year with Taunton Preparatory School for a massed performance of l'Estrange's 'Zimbe!', featuring over 200 singers, and the Music department hosts an annual vocal competition for individuals, with a guest adjudicator.
Top solo singers have regular success in several music festivals across the Southwest, and in the Rotary Young Musician competition, and they have the opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra in the Summer term. In-person exam sessions for ABRSM and Trinity College of Music are hosted in school each term, with excellent results achieved. There is also a regular series of pop-rock sessions, showcasing a thriving group of bands and songwriters.
