Full Job Description

Join us as a Safety Standards & Risk Advisor and help shape how non-electrical safety is managed across the business based from any of our Eastern, London or Southern offices (including Bury St Edmunds, Borehamwood, Crawley, Colchester or Central London) offering a salary of £68,144 plus car or car allowance, and a 3% bonus.

In this role you will provide competent health and safety advice to all business Directorates and UKPN Services so they can effectively manage safety risks. You will act as a subject matter expert on your specialist safety topics, owning the creation, renewal and onward communication of assigned documents within the safety management system.

You will provide subject matter expert health and safety advice to advisors, directors, managers, employees and contractors, acting as an intermediary when there are queries or challenges around the application of approved UKPN procedures or health and safety legislation. You will interpret new and existing legislation and codes of practice to ensure compliance with our legal and moral obligations, and you will lead the review and preparation of existing procedures as well as the development of new procedures or processes, ensuring they are communicated clearly to employees and contractors using appropriate media.

You will oversee the approval and procurement process for all new work equipment brought into UKPN, including tools and PPE. You will also act as a subject matter expert on investigation panels for Serious and Very Serious Investigations, critically reviewing completed investigation reports and providing feedback and coaching to Lead Investigators to improve investigation quality.

You will lead engagement and consultation with the wider business and Union Safety Representatives through Safety Action Teams (SAT), working groups and other relevant forums. You will represent UKPN at external events and conferences, such as the Energy Networks Association and cross-industry working groups, bringing emerging risks, innovation and best practice into UKPN. Working with Technical Training and with Technical Assurance, Assessment and Accreditation teams, you will support the development of training for staff and contractors and assist in monitoring compliance with safe systems of work within your areas of expertise.

The Safety Standards and Risk team develops new and revised safety procedures for employees and contractors. Day to day, you'll provide ad-hoc safety advice when requested, project manage the development of new procedures or the revision of existing procedures, contribute to risk management reviews and incident investigations, develop training, and undertake compliance activities.

You will work within the Central H&S team and engage with all Directorates and external bodies, providing effective third line of defence advice to Directorates on all non-electrical H&S matters. This includes providing subject matter expert support to in-business HSS teams and other teams that make up the second line of defence, and preparing and reviewing health and safety procedures; a strong background in one or more specialist H&S areas is highly desirable.

To succeed, you'll hold (as a minimum) the NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent and bring relevant experience of providing achievable professional H&S advice in one or more specialist areas. You'll have a strong understanding of safety management systems and safety legislation relevant to utility sector activities, be an effective communicator and team player with an inquisitive mindset, and have the communication, presentation, planning and decision-making skills to work confidently with Microsoft Office. A full, valid driving licence is required.
