Full Job Description

The construct of each post will be agreed with the successful candidates and will feature a combination of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, rotating around 2 specialties. The combination of specialties will be adjusted where possible to enhance each candidate's career plans. The candidates will work under the supervision of the clinical teams they are attached to and will contribute to out of hours work within the specialist surgery directorate., This post offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work in a dynamic hospital in three exciting surgical specialties. In the Plastic Surgery Department, there is a diverse workload; the subspecialties include trauma, elective hand and upper limb, head and neck, craniofacial, cleft, sarcoma, bone infection, breast reconstruction and skin cancer. The post holder will have exposure to both emergency and elective practice - on the ward, in clinic and in theatre. In Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery the post holder will have a comprehensive exposure to all aspects of elective and emergency Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at a tertiary centre including maxillofacial trauma, head and neck cancer and reconstruction, salivary gland surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, dentoalveolar surgery and orthognathic (deformity) surgery. Teaching, training and guidance will be provided to strengthen application towards Core surgical training jobs.

ST1/2 CT1 level equivalent,

  • Full GMC with licence to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at relevant courses, e.g., ATLS
  • Completion of Foundation Programme, Must have worked in the NHS in the UK prior to this appointment., Evidence of participation in risk management and/or clinical/laboratory research, Judgement under Pressure: Capacity to operate effectively under pressure & remain objective in highly emotive/pressurised situations. Awareness of own limitations & when to ask for help.
  • Communication Skills: Capacity to communicate effectively & sensitively with others, able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand
  • MUST BE FLUENT IN SPOKEN AND WRITTEN ENGLISH
  • Problem Solving: Capacity to think beyond the obvious, with analytical and flexible mind. Capacity to bring a range of approaches to problem solving.
  • Situation Awareness: Capacity to monitor and anticipate situations that may change rapidly.
  • Decision Making: Demonstrates effective judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Leadership & Team Involvement: Capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team & demonstrate leadership when appropriate. Capacity to establish good working relations with others.
  • Organisation & Planning: Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent & important demands, follow instructions. Understands importance & impact of information systems.
  • Technical Knowledge & Clinical Expertise: Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need. Demonstrates appropriate technical competence & evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills & judgement, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The post will be in 4 month blocks rotating between Plastic Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
