Full Job Description

Maternity support workers are central to quality care and information provision working alongside midwives and the wider professional teams to achieve excellence in maternity care. We are seeking enthusiastic, hard-working, flexible individuals to assist us to provide the best care at all times. We have a a mixture of antenatal, postnatal and birthing wards where our support workers can work. The role is rotational so you will work across the acute materntiy service. The role can include duties such as breastfeeding support, maternal observations, stocking up the ward area and some cleaning duties. We are happy to consider part-time/full-time applicants, with a minimum of 22.5 hours required. We do not offer term time only contracts at present. Please note: This role includes 50% unsocial hours working, including night shifts and weekends. Shifts are generally 12.5 hours from 0730-2000 or 1930-2000. We are happy to discuss Flexible Working options at interview. This role is not eligible for overseas sponsorship., As a member of the maternity team you will support and closely work with registered midwives to deliver a high standard of care to women in a caring and safe environment. To work as part of the wider team in developing and maintaining services provided to women and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the ward/clinical area. To maintain the dignity and privacy of all women and respect their right to confidentiality., As a member of the maternity team, you will support and closely work with registered midwives and sonographers to deliver a high standard of care to women in a caring and safe environment. To work as part of the wider ward team in developing and maintaining services provided to women and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the ward/clinical area. To maintain the dignity and privacy of all women and respect their right to confidentiality. To complete and maintain on an ongoing basis a generic and specific portfolio of clinical competencies and/or the Care Certificate as required. To review progress with line manager at regular intervals and through the appraisal process. Understand own level of responsibility, scope of practice and accountability in relation to registered staff. All policies must also be adhered to at all times. All new in role, Nursing Assistants, Theatre Support Workers, Maternity Support Workers and Assistant Practitioners will be expected to achieve the Care Certificate within the first 12 weeks of employment if they have not already done so through previous employment. The Care Certificate consists of 15 standards that set out explicit learning outcomes, competences and standards of behaviour that are expected of a Nursing Assistant. The Oxford University Hospitals Support Worker Academy team deliver an enhanced and extended induction programme, this to facilitatethe training and education required to maintain quality assurance, support and guidance to ensure timely completion and compliance.

  • Evidence of commitment to the Oxford University Hospitals vision and values, 5 GCSE's or equivalent, to include Maths and English OR previous clinical experience
  • Good command of spoken English assessed in application/at interview
  • Motivated to develop knowledge and skills
  • Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Level 2 Diploma or Apprenticeship in Health related subject or willing to work towards
  • Evidence of the Care Certificate and understanding of the Code of Conduct for Health Care Support Workers and Adult Social care workers in England., Demonstrates awareness of importance of working as part of a team.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to undertake specific procedures involving physical skills and prolonged moderate physical exertion co.
  • Desirable criteria
  • Experience of the NHS and /or health care requirements
  • Has previously worked in maternity/neonatal/children's services
  • Planning and OrganisationEssential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of working in a busy and variable environment
  • Able to use initiative within the boundaries of the role
  • Evidence of working with the general public as part of a team, Demonstrate insight into role applied for.
  • To be willing to learn new skills and to undertake the Care Certificate in the agreed timescales when new to role, Able to work under direct and indirect supervision
  • Reliable and organised with good time management skills
  • Ability to cope effectively under pressure and resilient with maturity to experience potentially distressing situations.
  • Good interpersonal skills demonstrating sensitivity and self- awareness. Polite and approachable.
  • Recognise limitations and seek help and guidance and accept constructive criticism
  • Essential IT skills in order to access required systems such as electronic patient records.
