Full Job Description
Are you passionate about making a lasting difference in the lives of young people? We are seeking a dedicated and caring House Parent to provide outstanding pastoral care and create a warm, safe, and supportive boarding environment where students can flourish. As a key member of our boarding community, you will take responsibility for the pastoral care, safeguarding, health, safety, and wellbeing of our boarders, ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and able to reach their full potential. Acting in loco parentis, you will provide guidance, encouragement, and stability, helping students develop confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging. You will play a central role in creating a structured and nurturing house environment, where students feel at home and where their individual needs are understood and supported. Working within the requirements of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools, you will help ensure the highest standards of care, protection, and welfare for all boarders. Key Responsibilities 1. Safeguarding and Child Protection (NMS 11-16)
- Implement and adhere to all school safeguarding and child protection policies in line with statutory guidance (including Keeping Children Safe in Education).
- Maintain vigilance at all times, ensuring students are safeguarded from harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
- Report and record all safeguarding concerns promptly and in accordance with school procedures.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and model safe working practice.
- Ensure students understand how to raise concerns and access support. 2. Boarders' Welfare and Pastoral Care (NMS 2-4)
- Provide a high standard of individualised pastoral care, ensuring each student's needs are known, monitored, and supported.
- Promote boarders' physical and emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, and independence.
- Ensure students are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness at all times.
- Support students experiencing homesickness, emotional difficulty, or social challenges.
- Maintain regular oversight of student wellbeing through structured pastoral systems. 3. Health Care and Medical Provision (NMS 3 & 7)
- Provide appropriate care for students who are unwell, ensuring supervision, comfort, and access to medical support.
- Administer medication strictly in accordance with school policy, written parental consent, and medical guidance.
- Ensure all medication is: + Stored securely and appropriately (including controlled drugs where applicable) + Clearly labelled and accessible only to authorised staff
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records of: + Medication administration + Illness, injury, and treatment
- Liaise effectively with: + Medical staff + Parents/guardians + External health professionals
- Ensure appropriate infection control measures and health protocols are followed. 4. Supervision and Security (NMS 15)
- Ensure appropriate levels of supervision at all times, including evenings, overnight, and weekends.
- Maintain accurate knowledge of students' whereabouts and ensure robust registration procedures.
- Implement appropriate security measures within the boarding house.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, incidents, or missing student situations. 5. Behaviour, Discipline and Anti-Bullying (NMS 12)
- Promote high standards of behaviour through clear expectations and consistent application of school policies.
- Implement behaviour management strategies that are fair, proportionate, and non-humiliating.
- Actively prevent and respond to bullying, including child-on-child abuse.
- Maintain clear and accurate records of behavioural incidents and sanctions. 6. Boarding Environment and Accommodation (NMS 5-8)
- Ensure the boarding house provides a safe, clean, and suitable living environment.
- Monitor standards of hygiene, maintenance, and health & safety compliance.
- Report and follow up on any defects or risks promptly.
- Ensure boarders have appropriate privacy and personal space. 7. Daily Routines and Care (NMS 2 & 9)
- Establish and maintain clear, structured daily routines, including: + Morning and bedtime routines + Meals and nutrition + Prep and study periods
- Ensure students are: + Properly supervised + Punctual and prepared for school + Supported in developing independence and life skills 8. Communication and Record Keeping (NMS 13)
- Maintain clear, accurate, and confidential records relating to: + Safeguarding + Welfare and pastoral care + Behaviour + Health and medication
- Communicate effectively with: + Parents and guardians + Teaching and pastoral staff + Senior leadership
- Ensure information is shared appropriately, respecting confidentiality and data protection requirements. 9. Leadership of Boarding Ethos (NMS 1)
- Promote and uphold the school's boarding principles and ethos.
- Create a boarding environment that reflects: + Equality and inclusion + Mutual respect + Student voice and participation
- Encourage community, belonging, and positive relationships within the house. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All staff are expected to share this commitment and to uphold the highest standards of safeguarding practice. The successful candidate will be subject to appropriate safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check, and any other checks required in line with current legislation and safer recruitment guidance.
