Full Job Description

We're looking for a Reserves Assistant (Outreach) to work on NWT managed areas within the Brecks and Fens including the Wissey Wetlands and Brecks Heath Partnership site on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

The Brecks Reserves Assistant will be based at NWT East Wretham Heath Reserve, in Norfolk, and will be expected to work at other NWT managed areas within the Brecks and Fens including the Wissey Wetlands and Brecks Heath Partnership sites. The Reserves Assistant will be expected to undertake a variety of habitat management tasks, including fen mowing, scrub management, tractor work and maintenance of machinery and infrastructure.

This role also has a larger element of public engagement and outreach, including planning and leading guided walks and talks, liaison with local community groups and setting up reserve-based volunteer activities.

The post is demanding but presents the opportunity to work on some of the county's most important wildlife sites and develop valuable skills in the management of nature reserves and their visitors.

The successful candidate will have a good working knowledge of wildlife conservation with good communication skills, both with colleagues and members of the public as well as the ability to work as part of a team in managing these sites and working to a busy work programme. The successful candidate will have an aptitude for practical tasks and will be willing and able to be trained in the use of tractors, brush-cutter, chainsaw, pesticide application and in first aid. Experience of livestock management is also desirable.

Experience and confidence in planning and delivering a program of guided on-reserve events to a wide range of user groups will also be necessary.

The hours of work will normally be 8:00am to 4:00pm with half an hour for lunch. You will be expected to work alternate weekends between March-August and one weekend in four outside of that time. Rest days will be taken on the following Monday/Tuesday in lieu of this. You may be required to work occasional evenings and bank holidays for which reasonable time off in lieu will be granted.
