Research Technician

A Research Technician position is available in Dr Alex de Mendoza's laboratory in the Department of Biology, School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences, Queen Mary University of London.

Building on ongoing work in the group on the evolution of adenine DNA methylation in eukaryotic genomes (www.demendozalab.com), this project will investigate the regulatory roles of this epigenetic mark using comparative functional genomic approaches. The project will leverage genome resources generated in the laboratory and multiple species we keep in culture to uncover new principles of gene regulation in eukaryotes, in a quest to understand why adenine methylation evolved in the Last Eukaryotic Common Ancestor, but also why multicellular lineages lost this pathway.

The post is full-time, with an initial contract of 3 years, with the possibility of extension up to 6 years. The main responsibilities include performing eukaryotic cell culture and basic molecular biology procedures. There will also be opportunities to contribute to supervision of students and to collaborate with international partners.

The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Genetics, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field. Have experience with cell culture and molecular biology. With desirable skills include experience in omics library preparation and working with unicellular eukaryotes or non-traditional model systems (e.g. cnidaria).

You will hold strong communication skills and effective collaboration, with demonstrable outcomes. Self-motivation, teamwork abilities, and excellent research management skills.

The role sits within the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences, one of the largest Schools within Queen Mary University of London.
