Full Job Description

Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health, Level 2,3&4 Women's Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, OX3 9DU.
You are invited to join the Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health as a part-time Research Technician, where you will play a key role in supporting recruitment and sample management for NIHR portfolio studies. Your main responsibility will be handling research samples collected from patients, including processing, storing, and distributing biological materials like blood, urine, placentas, and umbilical cords. You will use computerized databases such as OpenSpecimen and REDCap to manage sample locations and anonymized clinical data accurately.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with Research Midwives, Nurses, Clinicians, and the Laboratory Manager to ensure samples are processed according to established procedures and shipped appropriately. You will assist in writing study-specific laboratory protocols and conduct regular audits in coordination with the Human Tissue Authority and Tissue Collection Officer. Additionally, you will maintain laboratory stock, perform various lab tasks, enter analysis results into research databases, and help organize sample transport to partners and coordinating centres.
Beyond technical duties, you will support general administrative tasks, manage departmental deliveries, and uphold health and safety standards. You will ensure confidentiality of patient and staff data in line with the Data Protection Act, keep the workspace clean and orderly, and foster positive teamwork. You will also record standard operating procedures and mandatory training, and provide coverage for other technicians as needed to help the department run smoothly. This position offers a dynamic and collaborative environment where your contributions directly support important women's and reproductive health research.
You should have practical experience working in a research laboratory, including hands-on use of standard techniques while strictly following SOPs. You need to be proficient with Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 tools such as Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills are essential, along with accuracy and attention to detail. You must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work well as part of a team. Maintaining confidentiality is important, and having an interest in women's and reproductive health research will be beneficial.
Please note that this role does not meet the salary threshold required to obtain sponsorship for a Skilled Worker Visa, however, applications are welcome from candidates who do not currently have the right to work in the UK but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route.
Applications for flexible working arrangements are welcomed and will be considered in line with business needs.
You will be required to upload a CV and Supporting Statement as part of your online application. Go to https://www.jobs.ox.ac.uk/cv-and-supporting-statement for information and advice on writing an effective Supporting Statement.
This role is part time (22.5 hours per week) and is fixed term 1 year.
