Full Job Description

We currently have a permanent Research Support Specialist post available to those interested in the governance of clinical research. Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust conducts a broad and diverse clinical research portfolio of in excess of 1,500 studies. This is an interesting and challenging role in a busy department. You will be working with a team of experienced R&D professionals and with colleagues within the Joint Research Office, an established partnership between Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Oxford Health Foundation Trust, the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University., The main purpose of this post is to provide support to researchers, and thereby ensuring the Trust complies with the relevant regulatory frameworks applicable to the conduct of clinical research. Successful applicants will be member of a team which is developing new processes in response to the changing national research landscape, providing a stimulating and exciting opportunity to embrace change in a creative way., The purpose of this post is to facilitate the set up and conduct of high quality research using risk-based systems, whilst ensuring that all research within the Trust complies with the relevant regulatory frameworks applicable to the conduct of clinical research. The post holder must ensure that the systems set up to implement these standards work effectively and are used by all researchers, both in the Trust and the two Oxford Universities. Due to the changing environment of the NHS this post includes responsibility for the development of new systems/policies as required in consultation with the Head of R&D Governance.

Ideally, we are looking for someone with sound knowledge and experience of clinical research and, preferably, previous experience of GCP monitoring, within the NHS or similar environment.,

  • A life or social sciences degree or registered healthcare professional with research experience within or related to the NHS., Experience of the conduct or management clinical research
  • Experience of more than one organisation or location
  • Understanding of the NHS R&D environment, research funding systems and clinical trial methodology and logistics.
  • Sound knowledge of the EU Directive 2001/20/EC, the UK policy Framework for Health and Social Care November 2017, the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations 2004 , the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Amendment Regulations 2006 , Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (GCP), the Human Tissue Act 2004, Data Protection Act 2000 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and experience of interpreting these in a non-commercial environment.
  • Knowledge of current national systems and structures for research in the NHS, specifically those relating to research activity within the NIHR Research Portfolio.
  • Superb communication, persuasion, listening and strong interpersonal skills as well as attention to detail and a sharp analytical mind and an ability to think laterally
  • Must be diplomatic, confident, flexible and presentable
  • Good IT skills and aptitude essential with a demonstrable ability and desire to utilise standard programmes such as Excel, Word or Access to a level appropriate for the requirements of clinical research conduct
  • Ability to work constructively as an individual and as part of a close-knit team
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own work
  • Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with common issues within own specialist area of competence.
  • Ability to concentrate when subject to constantly unpredictable working patterns (e.g. when interrupted to provide urgent advice from multiple team members).
  • Ability to deal with the variety of personalities and challenges involved in clinical research
  • Ability to discuss and deal with complex and unpredictable issues with other professional groups.
  • Ability to train groups of other professional staff.
  • Good negotiation skills with staff and collaborators.
  • Confident, diplomatic, approachable and presentable
  • Flexible and adaptive approach to work
  • Positive and innovative approach to appropriate change.

  • Experience of monitoring compliance with Good Clinical Practice.
  • Experience of protocol development, preparation and submission of Ethics and/or regulatory applications
