Full Job Description
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Research Coordinator to support an exciting forensic research project focused on diatom transfer and analysis. Diatoms, microscopic algae widely used in forensic investigations, are key in determining cause of death and providing trace evidence in drowning cases. While their transfer to clothing and footwear is well understood, this project will explore their transfer to glove materials, an area that has not yet been systematically studied. The research will involve experimental work under marine conditions at Thurstaston Beach, Wirral. In this role, you will support laboratory and microscopy-based work, including diatom preparation, identification, and analysis using microscopy and SEM. You will also contribute to data analysis, literature reviews, and reporting, as well as participate in research meetings and wider project activities. This is a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on research experience and contribute to innovative forensic science, with the opportunity to be recognised as a co-author on the resulting publication. As part of the University's ongoing commitment to redeployment, please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any stage of the recruitment process if a suitable redeployee is identified. For informal enquiries about this vacancy, you may wish to contact: Dr Joanne Egan, Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at
You are an enthusiastic and motivated student with a keen interest in forensic or environmental research, particularly within the field of diatoms and microscopy. You will be studying Geography, Geology, or a related discipline, and have some experience or academic exposure to microscopy and diatom identification, ideally at introductory module level. You will demonstrate strong attention to detail and analytical skills, alongside the ability to organise your work effectively and manage your own workload with appropriate guidance. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team. You will also bring a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and an interest in engaging with academic literature and contributing to research discussions and outputs. This role is well suited to someone looking to gain hands-on research experience and play a part in meaningful forensic science developments.
