Full Job Description

As a Research Matron you will oversee a wide range of specialities and studies conducting in-patient, outpatient and healthy participant research within the clinical research at Liverpool Women's Hospital. You will work closely with the Head of Research and the Director of R&I at Liverpool Women's Hospital to meet delivery targets. You will be supported by other senior R&I managers and matrons., You will provide day-to-day operational leadership and management for our team of research staff at Liverpool Women's Hospital, in the delivery and oversight of their speciality portfolios and their individual teams of Research Midwives, Research Nurses, Research Practitioners, Research Assistants and various research support staff., Provision of professional leadership, motivation and supervision to ensure high standards of patient care throughout the research process. Responsible for the set-up, co-ordination and implementation of clinical studies in the relevant clinical areas within the Trust and other participating NHS sites. To ensure that all clinical research studies are conducted to a very high standard in accordance with research regulations, ensuring the dignity, rights, safety and wellbeing of participants are respected at all times. Responsible for the continuous monitoring to ensure each of the studies are conducted to a high standard with efficient and effective patient recruitment in accordance with study timelines. Establish relationships with potential collaborators within NHS Trusts nationally, and facilitate the process of approval, initiation and conduction of projects within these sites. To carry out clinical procedures and treatment interventions according to pre-determined protocols, including clinical examination of patients, venepuncture, venous cannulation, vital signs etc. Comprehensive knowledge of clinical research including issues on ethics, law, drug development and management in clinical research., The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated research matron to join the senior leadership team at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust., You will have proven leadership skills and demonstrable experience in line managing staff. You will need excellent project management skills and you must be able to troubleshoot, problem-solve and be creative.,

  • RGN/RGM
  • Post graduate Qualification in Midwifery, Nursing or Research
  • Attendance of recent short courses and/or study days on research
  • Degree in Health Care related field
  • Holds a relevant teaching and assessing qualification
  • Desirable criteria
  • Formal masters degree or equivalent
  • Clinical Examinations course, Significant experience as RGN/RGM working within research
  • Evidence of experience in effective management and leadership
  • Experience of developing and working within multi disciplinary teams and cross organisational/site working
  • Project management experience
  • Experience of managing project specific change
  • Supervision of staff/teams & appraisal & interviewing skills
  • Clinical experience / qualification in venepuncture, IV cannulation and interpretation of investigations
  • Experience of liaison with staff at all levels in the National Health Service, Universities, government funding bodies and Industry
  • Demonstrable experience as an assessor/mentor
  • Desirable criteria
  • Experience in heading up a research study and lead a team
  • Experience of presentations and publications
  • Experience in presenting to large audiences
  • Evidence of skills in grant applications and publications, Knowledge and application of Research Ethics Committee applications and other regulatory approval processes
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of clinical research and/or clinical trials
  • Knowledge of the role & responsibilities of a Clinical Research Nurse/Midwife
  • Knowledge of ethical and quality standards applicable to clinical trials, including EU Directive on ICH GCP requirements
  • Understanding of the relevance of research to health care delivery and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of the specific research subject.
  • Knowledge and application of professional nursing/midwifery issues
  • Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the Health Service, R&D, industry partnerships and relevant information sciences, Experience of set up, management and co- coordinating clinical research studies
  • Writing research policies / protocols / reports / action plans/ funding applications
  • Leading the development of research projects and negotiating research funding.
  • Capacity to deal with complexity of issues
  • Computer literate and proficiency in MS Office / ECDL/databases
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise / own workload and to communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and cope in a highly demanding environment. Possession of tact and sensitivity to the needs of both patients and colleagues, including a commitment to confidentiality
  • Excellent and effective verbal, written and presentational skills

  • Skills in handling and management of computerised data (e.g. the abstraction and coding of medical data, computer data entry, statistical analysis, report generation and data validation
