The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is the main hospital for the London Borough of Hackney and is attached to the St. Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry (part of University of London).

The first patients were admitted in July 1986 and the hospital was officially opened on 10th March 1987 by HRH The Princess Royal. Until March 1994, Homerton Hospital formed part of the Bart's NHS group of hospitals. From April 1994, it was established as a directly managed unit of East London and the City Health Authority (ELCHA) and became a trust in April 1995.

The hospital was granted licence to operate as a foundation hospital on 31st March 2004. This has allowed the hospital certain freedoms to facilitate innovations in the way that services are developed and provided.

The hospital has approximately 500 beds at present.
