SkyScan:Regional SSA Enhancement through Astronomical Imaging
SkyScan is a collaborative project between Northumbria University and 3S Northumbria that applies advanced astronomical imaging techniques to improve how we detect and track satellites and space debris. By adapting methods used in astronomy, the project will enhance the sensitivity and precision of space surveillance systems, helping to identify smaller, fainter objects and allow for faster orbital determination. This innovation will support safer and more sustainable space operations. SkyScan also strengthens the North East's space sector by transferring cutting-edge research into local industry, fostering regional growth, and laying the groundwork for future commercial and scientific developments in space situational awareness.
This role is predominantly data analysis. You will analyse publicly available data taken from optical telescopes to identify and track the trajectories of candidate satellites and other space objects. You should have a background in creating software and have demonstrable expertise in computer programming and the use of team-based environments such as GitHub.
There will also be the opportunity to engage in a range of public outreach activities and other initiatives run across the school of Engineering, Physics, and Maths.

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (STEM) and have demonstrable expert knowledge in Space Domain Awareness.
