Full Job Description

This Research Associate role will be based within Cross-Cutting Theme 2: Innovative Methodologies and will play a leading role in the quantitative and methodological components of the CARE-HSC programme. The post holder will lead the development, implementation and analysis of the CARE Race Equity Survey, including questionnaire development, measure refinement and statistical analysis, and will contribute quantitative expertise across the wider programme. They will also take a leading role in the CARE-HSC Data Management Board, supporting the governance and quality assurance of data collected across the programme. Working closely with Workstream 1: Formal Carers and other CARE-HSC workstreams, the post holder will undertake high-quality quantitative research to generate evidence that advances race equity in health and social care. The successful candidate will have strong quantitative research skills and experience in survey research. Experience or interest in qualitative, mixed-methods, participatory or co-produced research would be welcome, but the core focus of the role will be quantitative methodology, survey design and development, data management and statistical analysis. The post holder will also be expected to be based at the IoPPN, Denmark Hill campus, for a minimum of two days per week. The role supports flexible working, with the remaining time worked remotely where appropriate, although additional on-site attendance may be required for project meetings, collaborative activities, or access to secure data environments. The postholder will conduct quantitative research within Cross-Cutting Theme 2: Innovative Methodologies, using R to analyse data from the CARE Race Equity Survey and relevant secondary datasets, including the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey. This research will examine racial inequities in caring roles and experiences, and their associated health outcomes. They will take a leading role in the development and implementation of the CARE Race Equity Survey, including questionnaire development, refinement of measures, analysis planning and liaison with YouGov. They will also support the CARE-HSC Data Management Board in relation to the governance, documentation and quality assurance of data collected across the programme, and ensure that all research is conducted in accordance with ethical requirements, data protection legislation, King's College London policies and inclusive research practice. The postholder will contribute to academic publications, reports, policy briefings, presentations and other dissemination activities arising from the CARE-HSC programme. They will work collaboratively with the wider CARE-HSC team, including peer researchers, students, community partners and colleagues across other workstreams, and will attend and contribute to regular CARE-HSC team meetings, Cross-Cutting Theme meetings, supervision meetings and other relevant project meetings and events. The postholder will be supported to undertake training and career development in line with King's College London policy, which entitles research staff to a minimum of 10 days per year, pro rata, dedicated to professional development. They will also be encouraged to pursue relevant teaching opportunities to support their career development, with flexibility within the role to accommodate guest lecturing, co-teaching and contributions to curriculum development. Opportunities will also be available to gain experience supporting the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, placement students and interns. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 3 years and 8 months. To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria

  • PhD qualified in a relevant subject area, such as epidemiology, public health, population mental health, health services research or related discipline.
  • Strong quantitative research skills, including experience of applying multilevel modelling and/or Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy (MAIHDA) to health or social science research
  • Experience of using R for the management, analysis and visualisation of survey and health-related datasets.
  • Experience of survey research, including questionnaire development, measure development or selection, survey design, piloting and implementation.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of intersectional health inequalities, structural racism and discrimination, and their relevance to health and social care research.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with experience of contributing to research outputs such as academic papers, reports, presentations, briefings or other dissemination materials.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, maintain high-quality research documentation, and support robust data management and governance processes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with academic colleagues, peer researchers, community partners, external partners, and health and social care stakeholders.
  • Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
