Research
- To contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University through conducting research in Roman archaeology and isotope analysis to achieve the measurable outputs of the FRAME project including publishing in academic journals.
- To prepare bone, dentine, enamel and/or archaeobotanical samples for multi-isotope analysis (strontium, sulfur, carbon and nitrogen) and to assist with mass spectrometry when required.
- To undertake the management, analysis, synthesis, curation and review of existing zooarchaeological and/or archaeobotanical data.
- To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including , but not limited to destructive sampling applications and liaising with project partner organisations including museums and universities across Europe to arrange sampling visits.
- To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
- To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
- To present at conferences/seminars at regional, national and international levels, and participate in School research activities.
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects. Other
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., nationally and internationally to raise awareness of the School's profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Qualifications and Education Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in archaeology or equivalent professional experience Knowledge, Skills and Experience - An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within isotope analysis in archaeology
- Knowledge of current status of research in specialist field
- Experience of analysing, presenting and curating isotope data
- Proven ability to publish in national/international journals
- Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies Communication and Team Working
- Proven ability in effective written and oral communication
- Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals Other

- Relevant professional qualification(s).

- Research experience relating to the Roman Empire.

Internal Applicants Only - Research Associate School of History, Archaeology and Religion An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to join the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. This role will be responsible in conducting research in multi-isotope analysis, working on Roman period faunal (and potentially archaeobotanical) remains to contribute to the study of the diet of the Roman army and the strategies of food production and provisioning on the frontiers. The research is part of the ERC Consolidator Grant 'Feeding the Roman Army, Making the Empire' and the role-holder will contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research meeting the project's aims as required by the project lead. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same. This is one of two post-doctoral research positions in isotope analysis and the two role holders will work together in sample preparation and analysis on different aspects of the project (e.g. geographical areas, material types or isotope systems) to be defined depending on the skillsets of the successful candidates. This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term for 41 months, with a start date of 2nd September 2026 until 1st February 2030.
