Full Job Description
Join the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences for an exciting opportunity as a Research Associate in Advanced Spectroscopy for Sustainable Chemicals. This role is part of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council funded , a flagship UK initiative supporting the transition of industrial manufacturing to net zero and driving a more sustainable industrial future. The role is to develop the analytical tools needed to support more sustainable, low-carbon and circular chemical manufacturing. Working within a highly collaborative research environment, you will develop and apply advanced spectroscopic techniques to investigate:
- Catalytic processes for upgrading fossil-free feedstocks.
- Chemical degradation products and their environmental impacts. A key focus of the role is understanding reaction mechanisms through in situ and operando spectroscopy, contributing to the development of benign-by-design alternatives for the chemicals sector. The position offers outstanding opportunities for publication, collaboration and career development, supported by strong mentoring and access to world-class facilities, including the Energy Materials Laboratory and the Newcastle University Transient Absorption Spectroscopy and Microscopy Facility. You should have experience in operando and in situ spectroscopy, alongside the design and development of bespoke reaction vessels, cells or experimental fixtures that enable spectroscopy in novel or challenging environments. This is an exceptional opportunity for an early-career researcher seeking to build expertise in a highly relevant and impactful field.
