Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post is targeted at junior registrars seeking to develop their experience in T&O, particularly in major trauma, as well as gaining invaluable portfolio experience in surgical education as well as gaining a higher degree. They will be expected to be on-call for T&O for the Major Trauma Centre, sharing the rota with ~20 other registrars. Responsibilities include attending trauma calls; leading the oncall management of patients, running MDTs, as well as attending fracture and elective clinics. They are expected to have passed the MRCS and have completed Core Surgical Training (or equivalent) as a minimum. Due to the clinical and education commitments, this post is designed for applicants with a background and interest in Trauma & Orthopaedics, not for Sports and Exercise Medicine.
The Imperial Orthopaedic Education Fellowship is aimed at a junior registrar who is post-MRCS and wants to gain experience at registrar-level in Trauma & Orthopaedics. Senior SHOs who just missed out on a ST3 national training number this year will also be considered. It offers an opportunity to develop an interest in teaching whilst broadening clinical and research experience.
The post will be based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust where the post holder will have the opportunity to learn techniques of complex trauma management at one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in the UK. The successful candidate will also gain exposure to elective orthopaedics at the regional Major Revision Centre at Charing Cross Hospital.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination, organisation and delivery of the postgraduate T&O teaching programme at FY, CT and SpR level. The remaining sessions will consist of clinical duties at registrar-level, research and professional development.
As part of their professional development, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to be enrolled on the University of Bath's "MSc in Football Medicine in association with FIFA". This is a part-time distance-learning course beginning in September 2026 and spread over three years. The course fees for the first year will be paid for by the T&O department.
The post is available from August 2026 and is for 12 months.
