Registered Mental Health Nurse

We are pleased to announce that an exciting opportunity for a band 5 staff nurse has become available on Rowan Lea, Cross lane hospital. This post would suit an experienced nurse wishing to return to or gain experience in MHSOP nursing or a newly qualified nurse wishing to take their first steps into mental health nursing with older persons. It is an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge whilst working alongside and shadowing an experienced nursing team. Rowan Lea is a 20 bedded mixed gender assessment and treatment ward for older people, with both organic and functional illnesses. We work collaboratively with patients and carers to develop individual well-being treatment plans. The team encourages innovative practice and supports development at all times; and promotes a positive image of people with mental ill health. We have a broad multi-disciplinary inpatient team that includes nurses, medical staff, a physical health care practitioner, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. There is local access to nutrition and dietetic staff within MHSOP. We work in partnership with local Community Teams., You will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), we also welcome applications from Learning disabilities nurses (LD). You should be able to demonstrate continuing professional development, effective generic nursing skills and the confidence to meet the requirements of a Band 5 position working with older people while looking to build on those skills and competencies which may support in applying for band 6 posts in the future. You will be joining an established and supportive multi-disciplinary team that is committed to delivering high quality, patient centred care and be committed to participate in quality improvement activities. You will be working closely with other professionals in the team and external agencies; you will provide evidence based nursing interventions, including aspects of care ranging from initial assessment, treatment monitoring, delivery of therapeutic interventions, crisis management and positive behaviour support and discharge. You will have the on going opportunity to develop your skills within the wider team in relation to the care of patients experiencing organic mental health problems such as Dementia and Functional illness such as Depression & Anxiety, while developing leadership skills through taking charge of shifts and delegation. Among the main duties of the role Promote and maintains safety, privacy, and dignity of all patients in the delivery of patient centred care, recognising and respecting differences including spiritual and cultural beliefs. Acts, wherever applicable, in accordance with the Mental Health Act, duty of candour and associated policies and procedures. Acts as named nurse for patients and hold responsibility for the development of the care documents for those patients and others in the absence of their named nurse. Contributes to the planning, co-ordination and evaluation of clinical interventions to challenging and complex behaviours such as self-harm and aggression.

• Current professional registration with Nursing & Midwifery Council RNMH or RNLD
• To be a recognised Practice Supervisor
• Trained Clinical Supervisor or work towards in an agreed timescale
• Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
• Working with people with mental ill health / learning disabilities
• Working in a person centred therapeutic organisation
• Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers
• Working in a multi-disciplinary team
• Working in partnership with other agencies, Evidence based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
• Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act)
• Understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice
• Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice
• Clinical Governance and its application in practice.
• Confident working knowledge of clinical medicines management, including administration of injections, Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers/families and all members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Competent in using electronic systems to conduct assessments and documentation
• Manage own time and prioritise effectively
• Co-ordinate and prioritise the activities of the ward/community team
