Full Job Description

Working pattern: Full-time. Part-time (minimum 30 hours across four days per week). You'll spend up to 60% of your contracted working days presenting at the Immigration Tribunal, alongside case preparation and other duties. Office attendance is also required for training, mentoring and typically once a fortnight for team engagement., This is a challenging but highly rewarding role. You'll manage a varied caseload, prepare complex cases to demanding deadlines and regularly represent the Home Office before the Immigration Tribunal. Success comes from preparing thoroughly, presenting confidently and continually refining your approach as each case brings new legal and factual challenges. Whilst we provide comprehensive training in immigration law and advocacy techniques, the qualities that distinguish exceptional Presenting Officers are judgement, resilience and professional curiosity. The ability to analyse complex information, make balanced decisions, remain composed under regular and significant challenge and continually develop your expertise is what enables people to thrive in this role. • Remain calm and professional under pressure. Show resilience and learn from challenging experiences.

  • Thrive when managing competing priorities and demanding deadlines.
  • Build trusted relationships with colleagues, legal representatives and the judiciary.
  • No two days are the same. You'll often prepare multiple cases simultaneously, work to demanding deadlines and represent the Home Office in an adversarial environment where every hearing presents new legal and factual challenges. The role requires sustained concentration, both when preparing cases and when presenting before the Tribunal, so you'll need to be comfortable maintaining focus over extended periods. If you enjoy solving complex problems, thinking on your feet and making well-reasoned decisions under pressure, this role offers a unique opportunity to develop specialist advocacy skills while making a direct contribution to the UK's immigration system. In some locations, hearing centres are based away from your home office, so occasional travel to other centres may also be required. Training and development After joining, you'll complete a comprehensive foundation and mentoring programme designed to develop your knowledge of immigration law and prepare you for the role. Attendance throughout training is mandatory, with limited flexibility around timings. The training and mentoring programme provides a solid base of knowledge across multiple areas of immigration law, as well as how to operate effectively in the Tribunal. You'll also receive consolidation training alongside other continued learning. All of this will give you the right support and environment in which to increase your knowledge and skills in how to review, prepare and present Immigration Appeals. Application process The application process includes a Civil Service Verbal Test, a personal statement, a sift and an interview This allows you to demonstrate your skills and experience for the role and how you meet our essential criteria. If you pass the online test, we will sift your application based on your personal statement. The next step is an interview in which you'll deliver a 10-minute presentation and respond to follow-up questions. Details of the presentation will be provided at the start of your interview. During the selection process, we'll assess you on these Behaviours:
  • Communicating and influencing
  • Delivering at pace
  • Making effective decisions
  • We will also assess your experience to ensure your suitability for the role. To better understand the role and the environment you'll work in, we recommend observing a hearing at an Immigration Tribunal. You can find your nearest Immigration Tribunal on GOV.UK
