Policy Fellow

This appointment is available for 2 years with immediate start. The role will involve strategic design and implementation for the program on the economics of the ecological transition in the UK, including working on the design of a green Industrial Strategy that goes beyond energy, and the implementation of mission-oriented policies to support this work. This includes:

• A deep dive on the economics of the green investment and the green multiplier, with a focus on how the green transition can support growth.
• Policy projects to advise on the design of tools and institutions that will support the green transition, including the National Wealth Fund, HM Treasury's evaluation and accounting approaches (including the Green Book and Fiscal Rules), procurement, public/private contracts and the role of monetary policy and financial regulation in supporting the transition., Programme oversight of the new economics of ecological transitions programme. Ownership of the strategy, funding, staff, and day to day programme management.
• Manage and further develop IIPP's existing policy work around new economic thinking and green industrial strategy, green finance and investment in the UK.
• Coordinate and look for complementarities with other ecological transition programmes globally.
• Develop and write impactful policy briefs and op-eds aimed at a wider audience.
• Oversee the production of research and policy outputs
• Deploy knowledge of the external UK policy landscape to identify opportunities for greater impact.
• Develop and maintain strong internal networks and effective relationships with external stakeholders and policymakers.
• Support the Director of the IIPP and other staff in engaging with governments, politicians and policymakers.
• Engage key stakeholders across IIPP, create proactive strategic alignment and link-up across policy areas connected to the UK.
• Develop comms messaging to amplify impactful research and policy activities and output.
• Support the Director's media activities by producing timely briefings of current events and IIPP's positions and liaising with press and publishers.
• Management of staff working on the programme.
• Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required.
• Carry out other duties as requested by the Project Manager or line manager, within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the job.

  The University College London (UCL) Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) is working on a project that connects green industrial strategy, macro-financial policies, the role of the state as a market creator, and green public finance. The project will look to tackle the myth that net zero investment comes at the cost of growth, and shape government policy to reflect this. The project will build on Professor Mazzucato and Professor Ryan-Collins's work to challenge UK leaders to create and deliver a strong vision, maximise the impact of the tools and institutions at their disposal, and create the right implementation capacity needed to deliver a just transition. We will do this through a combination of research, teaching and policy practice. We will then use the lessons from this project to develop a blueprint for how to deliver net zero missions across the globe.
